Trevor Plouffe (rib) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester on Monday.

Plouffe took batting practice with no issues Friday, clearing the way for his return to game action. He figures to be ready for activation by the end of next week if all goes well.

Yasiel Puig (hamstring) remained out of the Dodgers' lineup Friday.

He hasn't played in a week due to a strained hamstring and a disabled list stint could be in the offing. Andrew Toles is handling right field.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Rangers are "all over" Vincent Velasquez, but a trade is "unlikely."

Rosenthal says the Rangers have done extensive background work on Velasquez and other cost-controlled starters. However, a trade for Velasquez, not surprisingly, looks like a big long-shot. The Phillies have the young right-hander under control through 2021.

Luke Hochevar is expected to undergo season-ending surgery to repair thoracic outlet syndrome.

He'll receive a second opinion first but is expected ultimately to go under the knife. The Royals have a $7 million club option on Hochevar for next season, but they'll surely exercise a $500,000 buyout instead.

Jhonny Peralta (thumb) is on track to be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday, the first day he's eligible.

Peralta is not expected to go out on a rehab assignment, as he'll just rehab his thumb with some baseball activities over the weekend. The veteran infielder has been out of action with soreness in his surgically-repaired left thumb.

Matt Carpenter (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Sunday.

If all goes well, Carpenter is expected to be activated from the disabled list next Friday. The infielder has been on the shelf for the last three weeks with a strained right oblique.
Jul 29 - 5:21 PM

Tyler Glasnow (shoulder) played catch from 90 feet on Friday.

It's the first time he's thrown since going down with shoulder inflammation. The Pirates don't think Glasnow will be on the shelf for terribly long, but there's currently no timetable for his return.

Ryan Braun (side) remained out of the Brewers' lineup Friday.

Braun has had trouble getting loose the last few days, feeling some tightness in his right side. At this point it's not considered more than a day-to-day injury. Jake Elmore is in left field Friday.

RotoGrinders.com Daily Slant: Braun's absence is great news for Steven Brault, but the Brewers still possess multiple RH bats that should give him trouble. Chris Carter and Jonathan Lucroy will shift up one spot in the order with Hernan Perez batting fifth and Jake Elmore slotting second. Perez is arguably the sneakiest target of the group; he owns a very solid .348 wOBA, .256 ISO and 39.4 hard% against southpaws in 2016 and has added 16 SBs despite limited playing time earlier in the season. Elmore is a viable punt play batting second, but he doesn't have much of a ceiling.
