Hanley Ramirez has been diagnosed with a left shoulder sprain.

May 4 - 8:15 PM

Mariners purchased the contract of RHP Mark Lowe from Triple-A Tacoma.

The veteran right-hander had allowed one run over nine innings for Tacoma, boasting an 11/1 K/BB ratio. Lowe will work in middle relief for the M's.
May 4 - 8:12 PM

Jeff Karstens announced his retirement from baseball on Monday.

Karstens is just 32, but his career went off track after a series of shoulder injuries. He was a solid, albeit unspectacular pitcher for parts of seven major league seasons, posting a 4.44 ERA and 1.33 WHIP for the Pirates and Yankees. Karstens hadn't pitched in the majors since 2012.

The Diamondbacks are hopeful that Jake Lamb (foot) will be ready to return by the end of their next homestand that concludes on May 13.

Lamb will have the walking boot removed from his injured left foot on Tuesday and will then ramp up baseball activities. He'll presumably need a short rehab assignment before rejoining Arizona's roster.
May 4 - 7:51 PM

Hunter Pence (forearm) is scheduled to take batting practice through Friday.

He'll have had a week's worth of batting practice under his belt by then. Assuming everything goes well, the Giants should then schedule a rehab assignment for Pence. He's tracking towards a mid-May return.
May 4 - 7:48 PM

Neil Ramirez (shoulder) is close to resuming throwing off a mound.

Ramirez has been throwing on flat ground for a little while now and is almost ready to take the next step. There's no timetable for his return, but he would seem to have a shot to be back sometime this month if he keeps progressing.
May 4 - 7:25 PM

Hanley Ramirez left Monday's game versus the Rays in the first inning with an apparent left arm/shoulder injury.

Ramirez crashed into the side wall while trying to chase down a flyball. He immediately clutched his left arm after banging his shoulder pretty hard. Worth noting is that Ramirez has had his left shoulder surgically-repaired twice before. It certainly looked like something that could keep the slugger out for a while, but we should know more later Monday. Ramirez is off to a .283/.340/.609 start this season and trails only Nelson Cruz with his 10 homers.
May 4 - 7:18 PM

Shannon Drayer of MyNorthwest.com reports that Chris Taylor is expected to "get a good opportunity" at shortstop with the Mariners.

It's no surprise, as Brad Miller is hitting just .250/.301/.382 and has struggled in the field. Taylor held his own during his time in the majors last season and was hitting .313/.385/.475 with two homers and six steals at Tacoma this season before being promoted on Monday. He figures to see the lion's share of playing time at shortstop for a while.
