Jake Odorizzi (oblique) allowed just one run on two hits and one walk over four innings in his first rehab start with High-A Charlotte on Wednesday.

It was a nice showing for the right-hander. Odorizzi hopes that he'll have to make just the one rehab start, although the Rays are considering giving him another one. He threw just 57 pitches in Wednesday's outing.

Desmond Jennings said Thursday that his surgically-repaired left knee is pain-free for the first time since late April.

Jennings finally had arthroscopic surgery last month after he was unable to get over the hump with his knee ailment. He's hoping to return sometime in August. "It's a good feeling," Jennings said. "I'm anxious to start playing some baseball."

Rays activated 1B James Loney from the 15-day disabled list.

Loney progressed more quickly than expected in his recovery from a broken left middle finger and has been cleared to return after a few rehab games. He returns to a .275/.322/.376 batting line and should provide a much-needed boost for the Rays at first base.

Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) is expected to rejoin the Marlins' rotation shortly after the All-Star break.

Plagued all season by inflammation in his pitching shoulder, Alvarez will need a rehab assignment but it's unclear when he'll begin one. The right-hander has been limited to just four starts this season due to injury.
