Tigers purchased the contract of OF Ezequiel Carrera from Triple-A Toledo.

Carrera is expected to receive the bulk of the starts in center field against right-handed pitching following the trade of Austin Jackson. It doesn't figure to be a strict platoon, as Rajai Davis will play more than just versus lefties. Carrera is a career .251/.306/.339 hitter over parts of five seasons in the majors but has had a big year at Toledo, batting .307/.387/.422 with six homers, 41 RBI and 43 stolen bases. He's worth a look for those in need of some speed.

Rays acquired LHP Drew Smyly and SS Willy Adames from the Tigers in a three-team trade that sent LHP David Price to Detroit.

Smyly isn't Price, but he's only 25, is under team control for four more seasons, and should remain a solid mid-rotation starter throughout that time. The left-hander is 6-9 with a 3.77 ERA, and has logged a career 3.46 ERA and 1.22 WHIP across 275-plus innings. He teams with Chris Archer, Alex Cobb, Jake Odorizzi and Jeremy Hellickson to give Tampa Bay an outstanding young rotation under team control for years to come.

Shane Victorino is expected to miss some time after aggravating his back injury.

It's not clear when Victorino re-injured his back or how much time he'll miss, but obviously it's discouraging. He just returned from the disabled list less than two weeks ago. The newly acquired Yoenis Cespedes will assume the majority of the at-bats in right field.
Jul 31 - 6:14 PM

Tigers activated LHP Patrick McCoy from the 15-day disabled list.

He missed the last few weeks with a strained hamstring. McCoy has allowed just one run over five relief frames for the Tigers this season.
Jul 31 - 6:07 PM

Rays acquired SS Nick Franklin in a three-team trade that sent LHP David Price to the Tigers.

Tampa Bay immediately optioned Franklin to Triple-A. It seems as though Tampa Bay is viewing Franklin as Ben Zobrist 2.0, so it's a little disappointing they couldn't move Ben Zobrist 1.0 today to open a spot in the lineup. The talented 23-year-old raced through the minor leagues -- his time at Low-A Clinton was even chronicled in the 2013 book Class A -- but fell out of favor in Seattle by slashing a rough .214/.291/.358 over 119 games the past two seasons. The former top prospect has destroyed, and continues to destroy, minor league pitching, so this is an interesting gamble by Andrew Friedman.
Jul 31 - 6:07 PM

Tigers optioned LHP Ian Krol to Triple-A Toledo.

Krol has been a disappointment this season, posting a 4.97 ERA over 42 relief appearances. He'll be back in September, if not before.
Jul 31 - 6:05 PM

Nationals recalled RHP Blake Treinen from Triple-A Syracuse.

He'll take the place of Zach Walters on the active roster. Chances are he'll only be up for a day until Asdrubal Cabrera arrives.
Jul 31 - 6:02 PM

Tigers acquired LHP David Price in a three-team trade with the Rays and Mariners.

Detroit shipped LHP Drew Smyly and SS Willy Adames to the Rays, and OF Austin Jackson to the Mariners, which sent SS Nick Franklin to Tampa Bay. It's a master stroke by gutsy Tigers' GM Dave Dombrowski, who watched rivals arguably overpay for frontline starting pitching throughout the week and then swooped in at the very last second to steal Price for far less than his expected, ahem, price tag. Price now leads a rotation which includes Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez and Rick Porcello, and is protected from injury by top prospect Robbie Ray. If Verlander can return to form, Detroit will have a rotation on par with anything we've seen in the last few decades.
