Josh Collmenter allowed just one hit over six scoreless innings and struck out seven in relief of an injured Trevor Cahill against the Marlins on Wednesday.

Collmenter missed out on a start Tuesday, as the Diamondbacks picked Randall Delgado instead. He got what essentially was a start today anyway and was outstanding, though he didn't get a win out of it. He's 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA in 40 2/3 innings out of the pen this season.

Heath Bell gave up a homer in a fourth straight appearance Wednesday, yet he still picked up his 13th save against the Marlins.

The homer by Justin Ruggiano only brought the Marlins to within 3-1. Bell, however, did allow a hit and a walk afterwards as part of a 31-pitch ninth inning. Fortunately for him, the Diamondbacks now have Thursday off, giving him a chance to recover. Bell, though, is leaving the door wide open for J.J. Putz to reclaim closing duties should Putz's rehab progress as hoped.

David Freese is not in the Cardinals' lineup Wednesday.

It's just a day off for Freese, who grounded into three double plays and struck out in his four at-bats Tuesday. Daniel Descalso is getting the start at third base.

Jose Fernandez was a hard-luck loser Wednesday after being charged with two runs in 7 1/3 innings against the Diamondbacks.

Both of those runs scored on a Cody Ross three-run homer after Fernandez departed. Fernandez allowed just three hits for the third time in his last four starts. He has a 1.65 ERA in 27 1/3 innings during June.

Justin Ruggiano went 2-for-4 and homered for the Marlins' only run Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

The homer came off former teammate Heath Bell in the ninth. It's the third straight start in which Ruggiano has collected two hits. Unfortunately, those three games have been spread out over 11 days. He's in line for more at-bats while he's hot, but the Marlins will probably go primarily with their younger outfielders as the season progresses
Jun 19 - 6:38 PM

Roger Bernadina was scratched from Wednesday's lineup after getting something in his eye.

It's no big deal, as Bernadina is available off the bench. Steve Lombardozzi is now starting in left field Wednesday.

Eric Chavez (oblique) could begin a rehab assignment as soon as next week.

"Everything has been good -- hitting, running, throwing," Chavez said. "I didn't know really what to expect, but [it's] gone really good." Chavez has already missed three weeks of action and doesn't figure to be activated until the tail end of June, at the earliest.

Dewayne Wise's (hamstring) return is being delayed by a rib injury.

Wise has played in three rehab games and seems to be over his hamstring ailment, but now he has a new injury to deal with. It's not clear how long this will set him back.
