Ryan Nassib received the majority of reps with the second-team offense in practice this week.
Nassib played with the third team in last week's preseason game, but his strong performance has him back ahead of Curtis Painter. He competed 30-of-48 passes (62.5 percent) for 378 yards with two touchdowns and a fumble through three preseason games. Nassib needs to hold off Painter avoid getting cut.
UDFA Darrin Reaves (knee) is inactive for the Panthers' third preseason game.
Reaves returned to practice Tuesday after missing over a week with a knee injury, but he hasn't been cleared for game action. His roster chances were increased following the Kenjon Barner trade. Reaves needs to get healthy to avoid the practice squad. He's competing with Fozzy Whittaker for the Panthers' No. 3 running back job.
Odell Beckham (hamstring) is inactive for the Giants' third preseason game.
Beckham was ruled out on Tuesday after suffering a setback in practice. He could miss the entire preseason and is questionable for Week 1. Beckham should be immediately re-inserted in three-receiver packages when healthy. Peyton Hillis, Prince Amukamara, and Jon Beason are also inactive.
Geno Atkins (knee) will make his preseason debut Sunday.
Atkins has been practicing since late July, but wasn't cleared for full team drills until this week. He's expected to play "a couple series" in Sunday night's regular-season dress rehearsal. Ten-months removed from ACL surgery, Atkins remains on track for Week 1.
NFL Network's Albert Breer considers Rob Gronkowski's (knee) outlook for Week 1 "optimistic, but not certain."
Breer says "everything is still on course," with Gronkowski, but he will not play in Friday night's regular season dress rehearsal, and likely will sit out the preseason finale, as well. Gronkowski drafters should strongly consider using a late-round pick on Heath Miller to hedge their bets. Miller looked terrific last night, and is incredibly undervalued at his 13th-round ADP.
A video surfaced on TMZ Friday of Bucs rookie WR Mike Evans throwing a haymaker during a brawl outside a Miami nightclub.
TMZ claims the fight occurred last weekend, but Evans' agent says it happened in March -- before Evans was drafted. We figured it was worth posting because the video has blown up on Twitter, but no arrests were made and it is extremely unlikely that Evans faces any repercussions stemming from the incident.
Coach Jim Harbaugh referred to Blaine Gabbert as "the guy right now" for the 49ers' backup QB job.
Gabbert has a 17.9 passer rating through two preseason games, including two interceptions and no touchdowns. Harbaugh still prefers him over Josh Johnson. The Niners would be in trouble if Colin Kaepernick suffered an injury.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports there will be no decision on Josh Gordon's suspension appeal this week.
Per FOX Sports' Mike Garofolo, the NFL Players Union and Gordon's reps were expecting a decision by the end of this week. RapSheet says one isn't coming, however. The holdup is believed to be due to a high volume of testimony on both sides stemming from Gordon's latest failed drug test. Gordon failed several drug tests in college, as well. He'll remain in limbo until appeals officer Harold Henderson makes a decision. Hopefully, it'll happen next week.
