Browns DL Phil Taylor (knee) is not expected to play this week.

Taylor is progressing after undergoing a knee scope on Oct. 8, but isn't quite ready yet. The Browns are getting wrecked by the run heading into Sunday's game against a somewhat resurgent Darren McFadden.

Browns DL Ahtyba Rubin may need surgery on his ankle.

Rubin went down during a practice two weeks ago and has gone for a second opinion. It's another starter down on a defensive line struggling badly to stop the run. Phil Taylor (knee) is not expected back for Sunday's game against the Raiders.

Terrance West was benched after failing to pick up a first down on a pair of second-quarter carries in Sunday's loss at Jacksonville.

West was actually playing ahead of Isaiah Crowell to open the game. He had room to run in both critical short-yardage situations, but tried to do too much. "I missed it," he said. "Wish I could get it back. ... I know I've got limited reps. So I know when I'm in a game, I'm trying to get a big play." On Monday, coach Mike Pettine lamented trying to get three running backs into the rotations. We wouldn't be surprised if West goes back to healthy scratch status this week, leaving Crowell to pick up all the work behind Ben Tate against the Raiders.

Marcedes Lewis (ankle) is expected to resume practicing Oct. 28.

Lewis is on short-term IR and eligible to return Week 12. It appears he's on that path. Athletic Clay Harbor will hold solid TE2 value until then.

49ers C Daniel Kilgore (leg) is out for the season.

Kilgore broke a bone in his left leg during Sunday night's loss at Denver. The first-year starter had been holding up well as he replaced Jonathan Goodwin, earning a top-12 grade from PFF. The 49ers will try to rush third-round rookie Marcus Martin (knee) into the starting lineup following the bye.

Austin Pettis was late for a Rams team activity over the weekend.

Pettis and practice squad WR Emory Blake were both late, and both have since been cut. But that was likely just the straw that broke the camel's back on Pettis. The former third-round pick had already agreed to a paycut and somehow averaged just 9.66 yards per reception in his NFL career. Stedman Bailey and Chris Givens are better prospects.

Bengals MLB Rey Maualuga (hamstring) is not expected back for a few more weeks.

Maualuga suffered a severe pull in Week 6 against the Panthers, adding to the Bengals' decimation at linebacker. Backup Vinny Rey had 16 tackles against the Colts in Week 7.

49ers OLB Aldon Smith's nine-game suspension could be reduced for good behavior.

As of right now, Smith isn't eligible to return until Week 11 against the Giants. But the league office is considering lowering the ban by one or two games, which surely would infuriate the Rams (Week 9 opponent) and Saints (Week 10). There is a precedent for reducing suspensions, namely in the form of Ben Roethlisberger and Brandon Marshall. The 49ers are on a bye this week.
