The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette noted big plays as an issue for the Steelers defense after Pittsburgh fell to Buffalo 43-19 in Week 3 of the preseason.

Safety Will Allen told the Post-Gazette, "You better be concerned about it, especially when it’s happening to the first-team defense, or any defense that’s out there." Buffalo started the big play fireworks with bursts from running back Fred Jackson and tight end Charles Clay on their way to a blowout win. The Pittsburgh defense will not be worthy of starting in Week 1 of the regular season as the Steelers travel to Gillette Stadium to face the New England Patriots, despite the absence of Tom Brady.

The St. Louis defense held the Indianapolis Colts to 28 rushing yards on 15 first half carries on Saturday.

It is definitely worth noting that Frank Gore was watching this game from the sidelines, but the effort was still solid from the Rams defense. St. Louis will need a similar showing from its defensive line in Week 1 of the regular season as Marshawn Lynch and the Seattle Seahawks will visit the Edward Jones Dome. The Rams D/ST is currently being drafted fourth among fantasy defenses and should be a solid group in 2015.

The Chargers defense kept the Seattle Seahawks offense out of the endzone on Saturday in a 16-15 loss.

The 16 points from Seattle came courtesy of three Steven Hauschka field goals and a Tyler Lockett punt return. The San Diego defense was formidable in yardage statistics in 2014 but struggled to record enough sacks and turnovers to be a weekly fantasy option. The Chargers are currently outside of the top-20 drafted fantasy D/ST units and begin the regular season with a tough Week 1 test against the Detroit Lions.

The Patriots defense held the Carolina Panthers offense to just 129 yards of total offense on Saturday.

The New England defense also allowed Carolina to convert just three of nine third-down attempts in the game. The Boston Globe noted the defense of the Patriots as one of their five post-game takeaways and the performance is encouraging for fantasy owners who are eyeballing the New England D/ST as the ninth defense selected in drafts.
Aug 30 - 2:10 AM

Cordarrelle Patterson returned a kickoff 107 yards for a touchdown on Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys.

The athletic Patterson has largely been a disappointment for fantasy owners who were tempted by the receiver’s combination of size and wheels, but he could provide a boost in leagues where points are awarded for special teams contributions. Patterson returned two kicks for scores in 2013 and will likely stack up piles of return yardage this season. The Minnesota D/ST is not quite on the fantasy draft radar but bonuses like this from the return game could help make the unit worth considering as the season progresses.

Navorro Bowman flashed his 2011-13 All Pro form on Saturday against Denver.

San Francisco would warmly welcome the return of their star ILB to All-Pro status after missing the 2014 season with a knee injury. The 49ers defense has been steadily falling apart over the offseason, so a boost from Bowman would go a long way in helping this unit stay afloat. The 49ers D/ST will be at home in Week 1 but won’t be a recommended fantasy option as Adrian Peterson and the Minnesota Vikings roll into town.

Eagles ILB Kiko Alonso missed Philadelphia’s third preseason game on Saturday as he continues to recover from a concussion suffered in early August.

Alonso originally told reporters he expected to play in the Week 3 preseason game against Green Bay, but was ultimately left on the sidelines. The Eagles D/ST would love to add Alonzo back into the mix as they look to repeat a successful 2014 season that saw the Philadelphia defense finish first in the NFL in fumble recoveries with 16, and second in sacks with 49.
Aug 30 - 2:05 AM

The New York Giants defense recorded just one sack and zero turnovers in their Week 3 preseason contest against the New York Jets.

The Giants D/ST unit is currently being drafted outside the top-20 fantasy defenses, and for good reason. The Giants were 29th in yards allowed per game in 2014, forking over 375.8 yards to opposing offenses each week. Not only is the Giants D/ST worth ignoring in drafts, but they will not be on the Week 1 streaming radar as a trip to Dallas is on the Week 1 schedule.
