Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Thursday that Brendan Ryan (back, hamstring) is about a week away from being activated.

Ryan has been playing in extended spring training games for a week, though he had a mini-setback earlier this week when his hamstring tightened up on him. However, it sounds like he's back on track and will rejoin the Yankees in early May.

Astros manager Bo Porter said that Matt Albers (shoulder) remains unavailable for Thursday's game.

"Albers is one guy that's dealing with some shoulder stiffness," Porter said Thursday. "He's been down the last couple days. He's down again today. We'll let the training staff continue to evaluate, and we'll go day to day with his situation." While he reiterated that the team doesn't think Albers' injury is serious, the skipper wouldn't rule out a DL stint if the reliever doesn't get better in a hurry. "The longer we go, that risk can increase," Porter said. "This is the third day, so I'm not going to jump the gun yet. We'll see how he responds to treatment and hopefully things will work themselves out."

Chase Headley left Thursday's game against the Nationals with a right calf strain.

It's the same injury he dealt with for nearly a month during spring training. The severity of the strain isn't known yet, but it sure seems like something that will probably send him to the disabled list. Alexi Amarista took over at third base for Headley on Thursday.

Rafael Furcal (hamstring) isn't expected to be activated from the disabled list until May 6.

A report on Wednesday indicated that Furcal could return sometime next week, but the Marlins have decided it would be best if the infielder used all of his allotted 20 rehab days. Furcal has just four singles in his first 26 rehab at-bats.

Chase Headley left Thursday's game against the Nationals in the second inning with a possible knee injury.

Headley appeared to tweak his knee as he came out of the box during a flyout in the top of the second inning, and he didn't take the field for the bottom of the frame. The Padres should provide an update on the third baseman's status before long.

Cardinals outfield prospect Oscar Taveras is back in Triple-A Memphis' lineup Thursday.

Taveras rolled his left ankle while leaving the batter's box Monday but wound up missing just one game. The top prospect is in left field and batting third for the Redbirds. Taveras is batting .299/.356/.493 with three homers and 12 RBI in his first 18 games with Memphis and could force a call-up before long with the big club's offense really struggling.

Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles are eyeing next weekend as the return date for Manny Machado (knee).

Machado will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Frederick on Friday and the O's are expecting him to only need a week's worth of rehab games if all goes well. That would make May 2 as the target date for the third baseman. The Orioles figure to ease Machado in initially with a handful of off days early on, but he's someone fantasy owners are going to want to put back in their lineup immediately.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Thursday that Jim Johnson could be back in the ninth inning mix along with Luke Gregerson and Sean Doolittle.

Johnson was stripped of his closer duties two weeks ago but has responded with 6 2/3 scoreless innings since then. Gregerson and Doolittle, meanwhile, have allowed a combined six runs over their last six appearances. Melvin also noted that while he likes the way Ryan Cook has pitched lately, Cook is expected to remain in a setup role for now.
