MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez writes of Johnny Giavotella that the Angels' second base job is "pretty much his, for now."

Josh Rutledge entered camp as as the presumed favorite for the gig, but Giavotella has outplayed him this spring by batting .343 to this point. The former Royals' prospect has always hit in the minors but has been dinged for his defense and was never given a real shot in Kansas City. He could have some AL-only league value.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Major League Baseball is expected to make a decision regarding Josh Hamilton's situation prior to Opening Day.

Heyman notes that "a suspension of some length" is expected following Hamilton's relapse, but "it isn't known what the resolution will be." The feeling is that it could potentially range from 25 games to a full season, although the MLBPA is arguably for only a 15-game ban. Hamilton is already slated to miss the beginning of the season while recording from surgery in early February to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder.

Kole Calhoun has been diagnosed with a bruised right triceps.

Calhoun suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch during Thursday's game versus the Cubs. He initially remained in the game, suggesting his removal was merely precautionary. Until we hear otherwise, it's probably safe to assume this is just a day-to-day situation.

Matt Stites underwent an MRI on his right elbow Thursday.

Stites has dealt with elbow issues off and on since the beginning of camp and it locked up on him during a batting practice session last weekend. The results of the exam won't be available until Thursday, but it's possible he could require an extended absence.

Jose Abreu singled three times in as many at-bats as the White Sox fell 9-6 to the Dodgers on Thursday.

Abreu hit his first spring home run on Tuesday, which might have given one the impression he was having a slow spring. That is certainly not the case, as Thursday's effort brings his Cactus League average up to .488 (21-for-43). The lack of power -- two doubles, one triple, one homer -- shouldn't be concerning unless it persists into May.
Mar 26 - 8:00 PM

Clayton Kershaw yielded just one run over six innings in Thursday's start versus the White Sox.

The White Sox scored early on Kershaw thanks to an Adam LaRoche RBI double, but the lefty was able to settle down from there. Overall, he gave up four hits and a walk while striking out eight. His spring results have been about what you'd expect: a 1.86 ERA over 19 1/3 innings with a 20/5 K/BB ratio. Kershaw will attempt to win his third consecutive Cy Young award with a strong 2015 season.

Jimmy Rollins had a big game against the White Sox on Thursday, batting 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and 4 RBI.

Rollins knocked in his first run with a second-inning ground out, doubled in a run in the fourth, then hit a two-run home run off of Daniel Webb in the sixth. The veteran shortstop has shown good power this spring, now with five doubles, a pair of doubles, and one home run.

Yasiel Puig homered in his third consecutive game, finishing 1-for-4 on Thursday facing the White Sox.

Puig now has five homers on the spring along with a .263 average (10-for-38) and 12 RBI. The Cuban superstar had also homered on Sunday against the Indians and Wednesday against the Padres, now giving him three in as many games. Puig looks like he's ready to begin the regular season.
