Cubs recalled RHP Neil Ramirez from Triple-A Iowa.
Ramirez was sporting a 7.71 ERA in seven innings this season at the Triple-A level, but the Cubs believe in his stuff and will use him in middle relief to help their overworked bullpen. The righty is making his MLB debut.
Cubs recalled LHP Zach Rosscup from Triple-A Iowa.
Rosscup tossed 1 2/3 perfect innings in a doubleheader earlier this season for the Cubs. The left-hander will serve as middle relief depth in the Chicago 'pen.
Cubs optioned RHP Blake Parker to Triple-A Iowa.
Parker surrendered five hits and three earned runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief during his 11-day stay with the Cubs. He should get another shot later this year.
Cubs placed OF Justin Ruggiano on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring injury.
Ruggiano injured himself Wednesday while attempting a sliding catch near the right-field bullpen area at Wrigley Field. He had to be helped into the dugout and could be out for much longer than 15 days.
Cardinals prospect shortstop Aledmys Diaz hit his third home run of the season as part of a 2-for-4 night for Double-A Springfield on Wednesday.
He is hitting .297/.313/.547 for the season, which includes five doubles, one triple, and three home runs. It is troubling that he has 16 strikeouts in 17 games and only one walk, but if Jhonny Peralta doesn't improve on his .151/.244/.356 line we could see Diaz in St. Louis soon.
Rockies prospect Jonathan Gray struck out eight in six innings Wednesday, allowing just three hits (all singles) and one run for Double-A Tulsa.
After a poor first two starts of the season, Gray has struck out 13 batters and allowed only seven base runners over 11 2/3 innings. He has an inflated 4.91 ERA for the season, but opposing batters have a .250/.297/.382 line against him. Gray remains on track to make his major league debut this season and could be a top 30 pitcher in 2015.
Cubs prospect right-hander Corey Black threw six no-hit innings Wednesday, walking three batters but striking out eight for Double-A Tennessee.
His teammates scored eight runs in the top of the first, so the no-hitter was salt in the wound for the opponent. Black is a hard-throwing pitcher who projects as a high-leverage bullpen arm. He has a 2.65 ERA on the season with 8.5 K/9, 6.4 BB/9, and 3.7 hit/9 rates.
White Sox activated 2B Gordon Beckham from the 15-day disabled list.
Beckham is finally ready for his regular-season debut after missing nearly four weeks with an oblique strain. The 27-year-old second baseman batted just .267/.322/.372 with five home runs and 24 RBI in 103 games last summer, and might not get regular playing time out of the gate with Conor Gillaspie and Marcus Semien playing well. Beckham did not hit well on his minor league rehab assignment.
