Cardinals purchased the contract of RHP Carlos Villanueva from Triple-A Memphis.
Villanueva was told Monday morning that he had made the Cardinals' Opening Day roster. The 31-year-old right-hander will pitch in long relief for St. Louis.
Cardinals placed LHP Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder injury.
Garcia was having a really promising spring up until this weekend, when his long-running shoulder issues resurfaced. It's impossible to guess how much the 28-year-old southpaw will be able to contribute this season. Carlos Martinez is expected to be the Cardinals' fifth starter.
Cubs reassigned 3B Kris Bryant and SS Addison Russell to minor league camp.
Bryant was the best hitter in the Cactus League this spring, but the Cubs can get an extra year of control on him if they leave him off their roster for another two weeks. The 23-year-old top third base prospect should be mashing in the majors by the middle of April.
Cubs optioned INF Javier Baez to Triple-A Iowa.
Baez batted just .173/.218/.231 with 20 strikeouts in 16 games this spring in the Cactus League, looking like the very same hitter who hit .169/.227/.324 with 95 strikeouts in 52 games last season as a rookie. Tommy La Stella and Arismendy Alcantara will see time at second base until the powerful but inconsistent Baez improves his plate discipline.
Padres acquired RHP Cory Mazzoni and a player to be named later from the Mets for LHP Alex Torres.
Mazzoni posted an underwhelming 4.67 ERA and 49/12 K/BB ratio in 52 innings last season for the Mets' Triple-A affiliate and he had been struggling this spring in the Grapefruit League. The right-hander was a second-round pick in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft, but he's not much of a prospect.
Mets acquired LHP Alex Torres from the Padres for RHP Cory Mazzoni and a player to be named later.
New York has been on the hunt for left-handed relief help since losing Josh Edgin to Tommy John surgery. Torres isn't your typical lefty specialist -- his career numbers against right-handers are better than his numbers against lefties -- but the 27-year-old boasts a 2.55 ERA in 120 career major league innings and he won't even be arbitration-eligible until 2017. It's a decent get.
Reds optioned RHP Pedro Villarreal to Triple-A Louisville.
Villarreal was shelled this spring in the Cactus League, yielding 11 earned runs on 15 hits in just eight innings. He'll be emergency relief depth for the Reds.
Reds released LHP Paul Maholm.
Maholm was pulled out of the Reds' rotation race in mid-March and he wasn't going to land a job in the bullpen. The 32-year-old left-hander should have no trouble finding a new organization, but an Opening Day roster spot may be harder to come by.
