Ervin Santana (back) will throw on flat ground Saturday.

It will be the first time he's thrown since landing on the disabled list with a lower back strain. The hope is that Santana won't be on the DL long, although obviously he's not terribly close to a return.

Indians manager Terry Francona said that he's considering using Carlos Santana in right field this weekend in Philadelphia with the designated hitter spot not available.

Santana is out of the lineup on Friday, but he could give right field a shot on Saturday and/or Sunday. The 30-year-old did play the outfield a little bit in the minors but hasn't started a game there since 2008 when he was in A-ball. It could be an adventure.

Alex Meyer will make his first major league start on Tuesday in Houston.

He's replacing Tommy Milone in the rotation. Meyer has started and relieved since the beginning of last season, putting up a 1.04 ERA and 19/4 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings at Triple-A Rochester in 2016. He has major control issues but also a big arm, so it will be interesting to see how he fares. He's worth a shot if you're in a deep league.

Tommy Milone has been moved to the Twins' bullpen.

There had been whispers of him having a start skipped, but apparently he'll be removed from the rotation altogether. Milone has posted a 5.40 ERA over five starts this season. Ricky Nolasco will move up to start Sunday and Alex Meyer will replace Milone in the rotation.
Apr 29 - 5:28 PM

Nick Ahmed is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup Friday.

It's a simple day off. Jean Segura has slid over to shortstop, and Brandon Drury will play second base.
Apr 29 - 5:21 PM

Jared Hughes (lat) is on track to be activated from the disabled list on Saturday.

Hughes is with the club in Pittsburgh now, but they evidently want to give him at least a couple days of rest after he went two innings in his final rehab appearance Wednesday. He got a late start to the season due to a strained lat.
Apr 29 - 5:04 PM

Jon Moscot (shoulder) is expected to make his next start.

Moscot had some soreness in his surgically-repaired left (non-throwing) shoulder on Wednesday in his last outing, but there's apparently no cause for concern. He's scheduled to face the Giants next week.
Apr 29 - 5:02 PM

Joe Kelly (shoulder) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session on Friday.

It's the first time he's thrown off a mound since going on the disabled list with a right shoulder impingement. Kelly will throw another bullpen session Tuesday and could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment after that.
