Stephen Vogt hit home runs in back-to-back innings against the Rangers on Sunday, finishing the game with four RBI.

Vogt hit a solo home run off of Yovani Gallardi in the sixth inning, then topped himself the next inning, slugging a three-run shot off Alex Claudio. He finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, four RBI and two walks. The big game gives Vogt six home runs for the season and 20 RBI. He's hitting a sterling .356/.455/.671 in his first season as the A's full-time catcher.

Shin-Soo Choo hit a double in Sunday's loss to the A's.

Choo was embroiled in a brutal 0-for-20 streak during late April, but suddenly, he's working on a baby hitting streak, as Sunday's double gave him a hit in every game of the weekend series against the A's to raise his slash-line to .141/.273/.297. He finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. If you happen to own Choo, you're in a tough spot, as his value is so low that you're not likely to get much more than a bag of electronic peanuts for him in trade. You might just have to hold tight and hope that he starts to gradually piece things together.

Phillies optioned RHP Severino Gonzalez to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Gonzalez pitched well in his second big league start on Sunday, earning a victory over the Marlins. With Chad Billingsley slated to rejoin the Phillies rotation this week though, his services were no longer needed. He'll continue to function as organizational depth until called upon again.
May 3 - 7:53 PM

Yovani Gallardo picked up his third loss in a row on Sunday, allowing four runs (three earned) over 6 2/3 innings against the A's.

Gallardo struck out one and walked four while scattering seven hits over his 6 2/3 innings. Stephen Vogt's two homers accounted for all three earned runs off the pitcher, though Vogt's second bomb came off the bullpen (allowing a few inherited runners to score). Gallardo's effort wasn't awful by any means, but he happened to go up against a red-hot Sonny Gray. After starting out 2-1, Gallardo's seen his record fall to 2-4. He'll take a 4.05, 1.44 WHIP and 25/12 K/BB ratio (in 33 1/3 innings) on the road against the Rays in his next start.
May 3 - 7:45 PM

Justin Upton swatted his seventh home run of the season and drove home three, powering the Padres to an 8-6 victory over the Rockies on Sunday.

Upton's two-run blast off Kyle Kendrick got the Padres on the board in the first inning and they'd pile on from there. He would later add a run-scoring double in the fifth inning, finishing the day 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. He's off to a terrific start to his Padres career, slashing .301/.340/.602 with seven long balls and 21 RBI.
May 3 - 7:44 PM

James Shields served up three home runs against the Rockies on Sunday and still wound up with a victory despite allowing five runs on nine hits over his 5 1/3 innings.

Shields punched out seven on the afternoon and didn't issue a free pass. Charlie Blackmon got him for a solo homer in the first inning and Nolan Arenado would add a pair of long balls before his day was through. Even with the rough outing, "Big Game" James has acclimated himself nicely to the Padres, registering a 3.72 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 48/9 K/BB ratio across 36 1/3 innings. He'll do battle against the Diamondbacks next in Arizona on Friday.
May 3 - 7:43 PM

Nolan Arenado blasted a pair of home runs and plated three in a losing effort against the Padres on Sunday.

He finished the day 3-for-5 at the dish. Arenado tagged James Shields for a solo homer in the fourth inning then got him again for a two-run blast the very next inning. He has been a force in the middle of the Rockies lineup this season, slashing .314/.348/.616 with six homers and 17 RBI.
May 3 - 7:43 PM

Kyle Kendrick was hit hard in Sunday's loss to the Padres, surrendering six runs on six hits over his five innings of work.

Kendrick struck out two and didn't issue a walk on the afternoon. Most of the damage against him was inflicted via the long ball, with Justin Upton and Derek Norris each blasting two-run homers. The veteran right-hander will carry a troublesome 8.73 ERA and 1.70 WHIP into Saturday's matchup against the Dodgers in Colorado.
