Darin Ruf is getting a second straight start at first base on Thursday afternoon against the Giants.

Ryan Howard will again take a seat. Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said Wednesday that he wants to see what Ruf can do with regular playing time, and there was a report from CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury that club officials are considering releasing Howard -- who's still owed over $60 million guaranteed -- after this season.

Cubs prospect first baseman Dan Vogelbach went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs on Wednesday for High-A Daytona.

Both home runs were to left-center field, allowing Vogelbach to display his well above-average raw power. He has struggled in July, hitting just .250/.330/.400 and failing to continue a hot June in which he hit .319/.429/.553 with 10 doubles, four home runs, 17 walks, and 15 strikeouts.

Dustin Pedroia is not in the Red Sox starting lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Blue Jays.

It's a routine day of rest for the 30-year-old second baseman, who has registered a disappointing .269/.337/.363 batting line with four home runs and two stolen bases in 99 games this season. Brock Holt is at second.

Padres prospect shortstop Trea Turner went 4-for-4 for Low-A Fort Wayne on Wednesday, raising his Low-A season line to .444/.512/.611.

Turner had his first hitless game for Fort Wayne on Tuesday, so the four-hit effort is a great bounceback game. In the short season-A Northwest League and Low-A Midwest League he has hit a combined .289/.377/.375 with six doubles, one triple, and one home run. Turner has stolen 13 bases while only getting caught once while sporting a sparkling .992 fielding percentage. He should spend the rest of the year with Fort Wayne then open 2015 with High-A Lake Elsinore.

Yoenis Cespedes has been diagnosed with a right thumb sprain.

Cespedes suffered the injury on a violent swing Wednesday night. He had homered twice in the game before exiting. X-rays were negative, but the slugger is likely to sit out of Thursday afternoon's series finale with the Astros. The A's are calling him day-to-day.

Marwin Gonzalez was pulled from Wednesday's loss to the A's with soreness in his right hamstring.

"It happened the second game in Chicago (on Saturday), I got sore running the bases and since that day I’ve been playing with (soreness)," Gonzalez told reporters late Wednesday night. "So I’ve been dealing with it." The shortstop is hoping to play in Thursday's series finale. He's hit well since taking over for Jonathan Villar.

Padres prospect outfielder Rymer Liriano went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk in his first game with Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

Liriano hit .264/.335/.442 with 20 doubles, two triples, and 14 home runs over 99 games with Double-A San Antonio. He has a right-fielder's profile and appears to have shaken off the rust after missing all of 2013 after having Tommy John surgery. Liriano has a career high in home runs (his previous high was 12), so this could be the beginning of his tapping into his power potential. San Diego seems like they are undergoing a full rebuilding effort, and Liriano is one of the prospects who could see time in the majors in the near future.
Jul 24 - 9:00 AM

Nationals right-handed pitching prospect A.J. Cole struck out six over seven shutout innings for Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.

Cole held Triple-A Buffalo to three singles and threw 67 of his 94 pitches for strikes (71.3 percent). Cole has been hit pretty hard in Triple-A, with opposing batters hitting .281/.296/.471 against him, though he does have a 2.64 ERA to go with his 1.207 WHIP and 7.0. The high isolated power (.190) is troubling, but Cole is unlikely to reach the major leagues until 2015, though a September call-up is a distinct possibility.
