Jaime Garcia allowed six runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision Thursday against the Giants.

In a battle to see which starter could be worse, Garcia actually had the upper hand on Giants starter Matt Cain for much of the night. The southpaw gave up two homers on the evening, and the Giants also clubbed four doubles off Garcia before he exited. The only saving grace was the fact that the Braves racked up 12 runs, and then held on late, to earn the win and leave Garcia's disastrous outing as a footnote. Through 14 starts, the 30-year-old is 2-5 with a decent 4.03 ERA that was almost a full run better before his last two turns in the rotation. A date with the Padres in San Diego on Wednesday should cure what ails for the lefty.

Robinson Cano went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, a grand slam and six total RBI in Thursday's 9-6 win over the Tigers.

Entering action on Thursday, Cano had not homered since June 6. He put that dry spell to bed in high style, connecting first for a two-run home run off Daniel Norris in the second inning. He proceeded to top himself with a just-got-enough-of-it grand slam to center in the seventh to give the M's an insurmountable 9-3 lead. For the season, the veteran second baseman boasts a .284/.343/.482 triple-slash, 13 homers and 48 RBI in 257 at-bats.

Ben Gamel went 1-for-4 with a two-run double in Thursday's win over the Tigers.

Gamel got the Mariners on the board with a two-run double off Daniel Norris in the second inning. That double kept alive a hitting streak which now stands at 14 games. Beyond that hitting streak, Gamel has picked up knocks in 23 of his last 24 contests. He is slashing .352/.411/.487 with three homers and 24 RBI in 52 games played for the season as a whole.

Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Thursday's loss to the Mariners.

After Robinson Cano cracked a grand slam to give the Mariners a 9-3 lead through seven innings, the Tigers at least tried to make a game of it. Cabrera pulled them to within four with his two-run homer in the eighth and they would score one more of the frame to draw to within a manageable 9-6 deficit. However, they would draw no closer. Cabrera has now gone deep in three of his last eight games. On the macro level, he is hitting to a .271/.370/.450 triple-slash with eight homers and 34 RBI across 218 at-bats.

Matt Cain allowed seven runs on 10 hits -- including three home runs -- over four innings in Thursday's loss to the Braves.

Thursday was the sixth time in his last 10 starts that Cain has allowed nine or more hits, and he's now given up 12 homers in 15 starts overall. On May 15, Cain was 3-1 with a 4.04 ERA; through Thursday, the right-hander is 3-7 with a 5.54 ERA. This is simply a case of time catching up to the 32-year-old. The Giants are still paying him $21 million this season, though, and with few hopes for postseason play the team doesn't need to find a better option if one isn't readily available. The Rockies are the next team with a chance to feed on Cain when the two sides meet up Tuesday.

Ian Kinsler went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, two total RBI and a steal in Thursday's loss to the Mariners.

Kinsler gave Mariners rookie starter Andrew Moore his first sting of the major league home run ball, cracking a solo shot off the right-hander in the third inning. The veteran second baseman has now homered in three consecutive games and has hit safely in nine of his last 10. In that 10-game space, seven of his 11 hits have gone for extra bases. Overall, Kinsler is hitting .254/.343/.420 with eight homers, 19 RBI and six steals in 57 games. A hamstring injury cost him about two weeks earlier this season, hence the slightly depressed number of games played.
Jun 23 - 1:14 AM

Making his major league debut in Thursday's 9-6 win over the Tigers, Andrew Moore allowed three runs on six hits over seven innings.

Moore ran into a few sticky spots -- a solo home run allowed to Ian Kinsler in the third, two more runs crossing home in the sixth -- but by-and-large, this was a phenomenal debut performance. He struck out four without walking a batter and finished his evening having thrown an even 100 pitches, 69 for strikes. The 23-year-old right-hander had been pitching to a 2.72 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 77/17 K/BB ratio in 82 2/3 innings split between Double- and Triple-A prior to his call-up on Wednesday. He will try to repeat Thursday's strong performance in a home start against the Phillies next time he takes to the mound.
Jun 23 - 1:11 AM

Daniel Norris yielded five runs on five hits over six innings in Thursday's loss to the Mariners.

Norris surrendered three runs in the second inning and two more in the third, the latter runs coming on a two-run homer by Robinson Cano. He ended his evening having struck out five and walked three. Norris has been serviceable at best for the season as a whole and will carry a 4.66 ERA and 1.58 WHIP into a home start against the Royals next time he takes to the mound.
