MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli reports that the Orioles are close to acquiring Jon Lester from the Red Sox.
The Boston Globe's Pete Abraham is also hearing the deal is close and says the Red Sox will receive a pitcher in return. He mentions Miguel Gonzalez, but he would figure to be a secondary part of the deal. It appears that Lester will get to stay in the AL East and has said in the past that he would still consider re-signing with the Red Sox.
FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Cubs have an agreement in place to acquire Felix Doubront from the Red Sox.
Doubront has fallen out of favor in Boston, but he should get his wish to start again with the Cubs. The lefty holds a career 4.82 ERA, but he's just 26 and has a career 8.1 K/9 rate, so it's probably worth a shot for Chicago if they don't give up much.
Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald is hearing that there's "zero chance" the Marlins trade for John Lackey.
FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reported earlier Wednesday that the Fish were talking to the Red Sox about a deal involving the veteran righty, but apparently those negotiations didn't get very far. Morosi's colleague, Ken Rosenthal has said there's a "very good chance" Lackey is dealt somewhere. It just apparently won't be to Miami.
Angel Pagan (back) could begin a rehab assignment on Thursday if his full workout on Wednesday goes well.
It's not clear how many rehab games he'll need, but Pagan has progressed well over the past week. He should be ready to rejoin the Giants' outfield in early August if he can avoid a setback. The veteran outfielder has been on the shelf since mid-June with a back injury.
Cardinals transferred RHP Michael Wacha from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The move clears room on the 40-man roster for the addition of Justin Masterson. It doesn't alter his timetable, as Wacha isn't expected back until September.
Indians acquired OF James Ramsey from the Cardinals in exchange for RHP Justin Masterson.
A 2012 first-round pick, Ramsey is having a nice season as he repeats Double-A, batting .300/.389/.527 with 13 homers over 67 games. He was ranked by Baseball America before the season as the team's No. 8 prospect. The 24-year-old has been assigned to Triple-A Columbus.
Cardinals acquired RHP Justin Masterson from the Indians in exchange for OF James Ramsey.
Masterson has struggled in his walk season, posting a 5.51 ERA over 19 starts. However, he's dealt with a knee issue and the Cards are hopeful that he'll pick things up if that injury is behind him. He should also certainly benefit from a move to the National League. Masterson will make his Cardinals' debut on Saturday against the Brewers.
Nick Castellanos is back in the Tigers' lineup Wednesday.
He missed Tuesday's contest with a bruised finger. Castellanos is hitting just .264/.310/.399 with six homers and 37 RBI in his first full big league season.
