Patrick Corbin came one out shy of a four-hit shutout as the Diamondbacks beat the Astros 4-0 on Thursday.

As if that wasn't impressive enough, he worked around three errors today (two of which came on the same play). He had a three-hitter going when Yuli Gurriel doubled with two outs in the ninth. Torey Lovullo came out to get him then and went to Archie Bradley for the final out. Corbin, a real disappointment for 2 1/2 months, has a 3.13 ERA and a 78/18 K/BB ratio over 72 innings in his last 12 starts.

Mike Fiers lost after allowing three runs -- two earned -- in 5 1/3 innings Thursday against the Diamondbacks.

Fiers is 0-4 with a 7.36 ERA in his last five starts. The Astros were going to bump Brad Peacock from the rotation when Collin McHugh returned last month, but since they lost Lance McCullers, they never had to make the decision. Now it's clear that if someone is going to be bumped, whether it's for a trade acquisition or perhaps McCullers' return next month, it should be Fiers.

Daniel Descalso hit his seventh homer of the year Thursday in the win over the Astros.

Against right-handers anyway, Diamondbacks manager Torey Luvullo seems to prefer Descalso to Brandon Drury at second base at the moment. Drury has been the better hitter, but only by a bit. He's also graded out better defensively this year, though that too isn't exactly definitive. Descalso is hitting .240/.340/.400 in 258 at-bats.

Aroldis Chapman (hamstring) threw a bullpen session on Thursday.

Chapman also did some running in the outfield and didn't seem to be favoring his injured hamstring. The Yankees are confident he'll avoid the disabled list, though he won't be available out of the pen Thursday against the Mets. David Robertson will continue to handle save chances while Chapman works through his hamstring issue.

Starlin Castro (hamstring) is set to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Castro got the green light after making it through batting practice earlier in the week. He landed on the DL last month after aggravating a pre-existing hamstring injury. Ronald Torreyes has been covering for him at second base.

Matt Holliday (back) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with High-A Tampa on Friday.

Starlin Castro (hamstring) is also heading out on a rehab assignment, though he'll be getting his work in with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Holliday has been taking BP since Sunday and shouldn't need more than a handful of at-bats to shake off the rust. The 37-year-old hasn't hit for a high average this year (.229 AVG), though he's still been a productive power hitter with 16 homers in 314 at-bats.

Cardinals recalled RHP Luke Weaver from Triple-A Memphis.

He's up for Trevor Rosenthal, who heads to the DL with right elbow irritation. Weaver holds a 3.77 ERA in four outings including two starts in the majors this year. Look for him to fill a long relief role for St. Louis.

Cardinals placed RHP Trevor Rosenthal on the 10-day disabled list with right elbow irritation.

The injury is specific to the posterior part of his elbow, which is the same area where the UCL is located. This would explain why Rosenthal's velocity was way down Wednesday against the Red Sox. Rosenthal had been doing a nice job in the closer role, producing a 1.88 ERA while going a perfect 7-for-7 in save chances since the All-Star break. Look for Seung Hwan Oh to lead a ninth-inning committee during his absence.
