Santiago Casilla worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to grab his 14th save as the Giants beat the Brewers 3-1 on Wednesday.
Casilla got consecutive strikeouts of Ryan Braun and Adam Lind before getting Aramis Ramirez to fly out to end the game. The right-hander hasn't been scored upon in May. He's 14-for-16 in save opportunities with a 1.31 ERA and a 21/7 K/BB ratio in 20 2/3 innings.
Ryan Vogelsong yielded only one run in six innings of work to earn the win in Wednesday's start versus the Brewers.
Vogelsong fell behind 1-0 on a fourth-inning RBI single from Elian Herrera but the Giants were able to scratch out enough runs to support him. He allowed six hits, walked none, and struck out five in the effort. Vogelsong has been stellar in five May starts, allowing only four earned runs in 31 2/3 innings. On the year, though, he has a 4.24 ERA, a 1.35 WHIP, and a 38/20 K/BB ratio in 51 innings. Vogelsong will try to bring the success into June in his next start at home against the Pirates.
Dodgers acquired LHP Eric Stults, INF Alberto Callaspo, LHP Ian Thomas, and RHP Juan Jaime from the Braves for 3B Juan Uribe and RHP Chris Withrow.
Stults was immediately designated for assignment by the Dodgers, so he's open to claims from other teams. The 35-year-old southpaw had registered an ugly 5.85 ERA in 47 2/3 innings this season for the Braves. He began his major league career with the Dodgers back in 2006. Los Angeles picked him in the 15th round in 2002.
Mike Fiers allowed two runs in five innings, taking the loss on Wednesday versus the Giants.
Fiers made one mistake, resulting in a two-run home run to Joe Panik in the fifth inning. It was one of eight hits the right-hander allowed on the afternoon while walking none and striking out six. Fiers is now 1-5 with a 4.53 ERA, a 1.55 WHIP, and a 63/17 K/BB ratio in 51 2/3 innings. He'll match up against the Cardinals in St. Louis in his next start.
Khris Davis went 2-for-4 with a pair of triples in Wednesday's loss to the Giants.
Despite tripling twice, the Brewers couldn't bring him home. Davis entered the game with two career triples in 865 plate appearances. The outfielder is batting .252/.335/.449 on the year with five home runs and 16 RBI.
Joe Panik's two-run home run proved to be all the offense the Giants needed to take down the Brewers on Wednesday.
Panik turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead with a two-run home run to right field off of Mike Fiers. He finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Panik has hit safely in 21 of 24 May games and is now batting .297/.366/.430 with three home runs and 17 RBI.
Orioles signed LHP Ariel Miranda to a minor league contract.
The deal was agreed to last week and then finalized Wednesday after Miranda passed his physical. The 25-year-old Cuban left-hander will likely spend a few weeks at the Orioles' spring training complex before joining one of the club's lower-level minor league affiliates. He was primarily used as a starter in Serie Nacional.
Dodgers acquired RHP Juan Jaime, INF Alberto Callaspo, LHP Eric Stults, and LHP Ian Thomas from the Braves for 3B Juan Uribe and RHP Chris Withrow.
Jaime has posted troubling walk rates in both the minors and majors, and is nothing more than a throw-in here. The 27-year-old righty will head to extended spring training before joining the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate.
