Saints owner Tom Benson says the decision to leave the team to his wife instead of daughter and grandchildren was a "deliberate, reasoned and difficult decision."

Benson's decision prompted an immediate lawsuit, with his daughter and grandchildren alleging that he is no longer mentally competent, and under the spell of his wife, whom he married 10 years ago. Benson insists he made every effort to groom his daughter and grandchildren to take control of the team upon his death, but that they "never rose to the task." A protracted legal battle appears likely.
Jan 27 - 5:23 PM's Ian Rapoport reports Colts associate head coach Rob Chudzinski's new contract is for only one year.

Per Rapsheet, Chud is the "likely heir apparent" to OC Pep Hamilton, whose name popped up in head-coaching searches this year. Be that as it may, a one-year deal keeps Chud's options open for 2016 if Hamilton doesn't move on.

The Indianapolis Star reports free agent WR Duron Carter is already free to sign with any team.

It was previously believed Carter couldn't sign before Feb. 10. The Indianapolis Star has tabbed the Colts as the "frontrunner" for Cris' son, but reports the Vikings remain in the mix. Despite all the hype surrounding his free agency, Carter would be far from a guarantee to crack anyone's 53-man roster.

Seahawks DT Brandon Mebane (hamstring surgery) expects to be "full go" by April.

Mebane tore his hamstring in early November, and required surgery. Now 30, Mebane is due $5.5 million in 2015. That's a steep price for a rotational run plugger who just missed half a season, though Mebane was among the league's better defensive tackles in 2013.

Thomas Davis expects the Panthers to address his contract this offseason.

Going into the final year of his deal, Davis will make $7.25 million, and count $10.066 million against the cap. Amazingly, Davis has now appeared in at least 15 games each of the past three years after continual ACL woes limited him to nine total appearances between 2009-11. Not only that, he's played at a high level. With Davis going on 32, a 1-2 year extension could be in order.

Seahawks DT Kevin Williams is expected to again consider retirement this offseason.

Williams nearly hung it up last offseason before the Seahawks came calling with a one-year, $2.1 million deal in June. Going on 35, Williams played 445 snaps during the regular season, plugging the run for the NFC Champions.

Patriots C Bryan Stork (knee) "hopes" to be active for Super Bowl XLIX.

Stork said he's spending his week with the Patriots' training staff. Stork was listed as "limited" in the Pats' bye-week practices. Likely looking to employ a power-rushing attack against the Seahawks' elite defense, New England needs its middle man back as it goes for its fourth Super Bowl title of the Bill Belichick era.

Redskins hired ex-Giants DC Perry Fewell as DBs coach.

Fewell was also a candidate for the 49ers' defensive-backs job. Fewell has been coordinating defenses or coaching defensive backs in the NFL since 1998. He's a nice addition to DC Joe Barry's staff, especially since Barry himself was such an underwhelming hire.
