The Chicago Sun-Times believes CB Terrance Mitchell has played his way onto the Bears' roster.

A seventh-round pick of the Cowboys last season, Mitchell could not make it through final cuts and spent the first six weeks of the season on the Bears' practice squad. He was promoted to the 53-man roster in October but did not see a snap. A playmaker at Oregon, Mitchell has one interception this preseason and has earned positive coverage grades from Pro Football Focus.

Dan Orlovsky is "well ahead" of Kellen Moore for the Lions' backup quarterback job.

Moore opened camp with the second-team offense, but he has been outplayed by Orlovsky. Through three preseason games, Orlovsky has completed 23-of-38 passes with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Jets G/T Oday Aboushi's roster spot is in "serious jeopardy."

Aboushi opened up camp in a competition for the right guard job, but he quickly fell behind Willie Colon and could be falling off the roster. A one-game suspension to start the year certainly does not help his chances. The 2013 fifth-rounder started 10 games at left guard last season.

The Colts' official website expects Jack Mewhort to remain at right tackle.

Mewhort has struggled in his transition from left guard, but coach Chuck Pagano said he knew there would be growing pains. The Colts do not have many other options at right tackle, and Mewhort has looked better as he has gotten more snaps. Mewhort faces a tough test against the Rams on Saturday night.

Colts ILB Nate Irving (knee) believes he will be ready Week 1.

Irving has been participating in team drills in camp and could see action in the team's fourth preseason game. D'Qwell Jackson and Jerrell Freeman should open the year as the starters inside, but Irving should see plenty of snaps in a situational role. Irving tore his ACL last November.

ESPN Panthers reporter David Newton believes Kony Ealy will be the team's starting right defensive end.

With Frank Alexander (Achilles) done for the year, Ealy solidified his spot in the starting lineup with two sacks in as many games. The 2014 second-round pick recorded four sacks in limited snaps last season, but he struggled against the run and did not consistently pressure the quarterback. With little quality depth at defensive end, the Panthers need Ealy to take a step forward.

Redskins QB Kirk Cousins will start the third preseason game.

Cousins has gotten most of the second-team reps ahead of Colt McCoy, so this is not that surprising. With Robert Griffin III (concussion) sidelined indefinitely, Cousins could open the season as the Redskins' starter.

Lions LB Tahir Whitehead played as the second-team middle linebacker in the third preseason game.

Whitehead had lined up as the first-team strongside 'backer throughout training camp, but Travis Lewis started and recorded eight tackles in that position against the Jaguars. A 2012 seventh-round pick, Lewis has just seven career tackles, so it would be surprising if Whitehead lost his job to him. Whitehead's role could be in danger if 2014 second-rounder Kyle Van Noy could ever get healthy.
