Miguel Montero has a checkup with a hand specialist Thursday in Chicago.

Montero has been hitting and catching at the Cubs' spring training complex in Arizona and he's hoping to be cleared for more activities Thursday after his exam. The veteran catcher has been on the disabled list since July 12 with a sprained left thumb. He is trending toward a mid-August return.

According to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, the reported trade sending Mat Latos and Michael Morse to the Dodgers "could be falling apart."

Latos and Morse are still in the Marlins' clubhouse and Marlins GM-turned-manager Dan Jennings told the media on Wednesday afternoon that he hadn't heard about any trade being close. Word is the Dodgers are trying to flip Morse to a third team, so that could be the holdup. There's also talk of this being a medical thing. It's going to be a crazy 48 hours as the July 31 trade deadline approaches.

Jon Lester limited the Rockies to two runs over eight innings Wednesday in the Cubs' 3-2 victory.

Lester struck out 14 and walked just one in the dominant outing on a hot, sunny day at Wrigley Field. The left-hander has been on a roll for the last couple of months, now boasting a 3.26 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 136/32 K/BB ratio in 132 2/3 total innings. He will get the Pirates on the road next time out.

Hector Rondon notched picked up his 13th save of the season Wednesday afternoon against the Rockies.

Rondon walked one but struck out two of the four batters he faced in a mostly clean ninth frame. Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Tuesday evening that Rondon could reclaim closer duties at some point, and it looks like we may already be headed in that direction. Maddon had been using a ninth-inning committee.

Anthony Rizzo cranked a two-run homer in the Cubs' win over the Rockies on Wednesday.

It was his first home run since July 7. Rizzo has been in an offensive rut, but he still owns a shiny .279/.393/.500 batting line on the season. And he's now up to 17 home runs and 53 RBI in 99 games.
