Trevor Siemian said he thinks the Broncos' quarterback competition is ongoing.

"I’m not reading too much into it, to be honest with you," Siemian said of being named the starter for the third preseason game. "I think it’s a good opportunity for us to take another step as a team." Gary Kubiak will be giddy to hear his new starting quarterback is a veteran at coachspeak. Unless he faceplants on Saturday, Siemian will open the season as the starter.

Chiefs released S Stevie Brown.

Brown has struggled to maintain an NFL roster spot since intercepting eight passes with the Giants in 2012. Brown is running out of chances at age 29.

Chiefs released WR Mike Williams.

Williams was trying to rejuvenate his career in Kansas City, but looked sluggish in the preseason and had a drop in the Chiefs' second exhibition game. At age 29, the former second-round pick's career looks to be nearing an end.

Broncos TE Jeff Heuerman (hamstring) will miss the third preseason game.

Another case of a second-year "redshirt" who can't get healthy, Heuerman has fallen well behind Virgil Green in their competition to replace Owen Daniels. A 2015 third-round draft pick, Heuerman's roster spot should still be secure.

49ers WR DeAndre Smelter (hamstring) will miss the third preseason game.

Last year's fourth-round redshirt simply can't get healthy. Multiple 49ers beat writers have suggested Smelter will spend another year on injured reserve.

According to Profootballtalk on NBC Sports, Chargers holdout No. 3 overall pick Joey Bosa has offered to defer a "significant portion" of his signing bonus to March 2017.

It's the first sign of progress we've seen in weeks though Bosa's surprise peace offering still wasn't enough to close the massive gap that exists between the two sides. Bosa has been working out in Florida but it's still unclear when we'll see him on a football field again. There's a very real chance this standoff could last into the regular season.

Dez Bryant (concussion) won't travel with the Cowboys for their third preseason game Thursday.

He suffered a concussion at Monday's practice and hasn't been cleared yet. Tyrone Crawford (concussion) won't be making the trip to Seattle either. Bryant has caught all four of his targets for 64 yards and a touchdown this preseason. His Week 1 status doesn't appear to be in danger.

The Jets' coaching staff acknowledged that second-round QB Christian Hackenberg has flaws in his mechanics.

Despite these flaws, the Jets have been careful not to overwhelm Hackenberg while he's still learning the playbook. "It's like a golfer," said QBs coach Kevin Patullo. "You don't want to change his swing midseason." Obviously the Jets are in no rush to get Hackenberg on the field. Right now he's a distant fourth on the depth chart.
