Braves LHP prospect Joey Wentz hurled five scoreless innings on Thursday for High-A Florida.

Wentz allowed just three hits and didn't walk anyone, and he struck out five. The 40th pick of the 2016 draft has been excellent in the Florida State League so far, and his ERA now sits at a tidy 0.64. Wentz has a fastball that gets into the mid 90s that plays up because of its life, and he also has a plus curve and solid change to boot. His command also has shown improvement, and if it can be even average, Wentz is a future starter. His current ETA is 2020.

Astros C prospect Garrett Stubbs went 4-for-5 and scored two runs on Thursday for Triple-A Fresno.

Stubbs also knocked in a run. The 24-year-old backstop was a disappointment in 2017 with a .649 OPS in Double-A, but he's gotten off to a start start to the 2018 season with a .395 average through nine games. He's a quality defender behind the plate, so he doesn't need to hit much in order to be a starting backstop. There's potentially fantasy value in him if he can, because he's one of the few catchers who offers a chance for steals. Keep an eye on Stubbs going forward.

Angels RHP prospect Joe Gatto struck out 10 in 6 1/3 shutout innings on Thursday for High-A Inland Empire.

Gatto scattered three hits and two walks, but didn't give up anything in the run column. A second-round pick in 2014, Gatto has shown quality stuff while a member of the Angels' organization, but the results haven't been there. He's off to a strong start in 2018, with 21 strikeouts in just over 13 innings and an ERA of 3.38. Sometimes these things take time. Gatto still has a chance to be a starter at the highest level.

Rangers OF prospect Willie Calhoun went 1-for-4 with a homer on Thursday for Triple-A Round Rock.

It's just the second homer of the season for Calhoun, who currently owns a disappointing .708 OPS to begin the season. The 23-year-old has gotten off to slow starts before, so this shouldn't cause any type of long-term panic. He'll need to hit better soon if he's going to get the call to the Rangers, however.
Apr 20 - 1:54 PM

Orioles LHP prospect Keegan Akin struck out seven over six one-run innings on Thursday for Double-A Bowie.

It was easily Akin's best start of the 2018 campaign, as even with the quality outing his ERA sits at 4.80. The 54th pick of the 2016 draft, Akin shows an above-average fastball and slider, and he'll mix in a fringe-average change when he's operating at his best. His command comes and goes, and all three pitches vary in quality. He has a chance to pitch in a rotation, but he might profile best as a reliever.
Apr 20 - 1:44 PM

White Sox OF prospect Blake Rutherford went 4-for-5 with a run and a stolen bases for High-A Winston-Salem on Thursday.

The steal gives Rutherford three on the season. The former Yankees first-round pick is now hitting .404/.442/.563 on the season, which is good. He's not showing the power he showed as a prep, but he's hit seven doubles, and those should translate into homers as he gets stronger -- and the weather gets better. He could be an everyday player in the White Sox lineup before the end of the decade.

Diamondbacks signed RHP Brian Ellington to a minor league contract.

Ellington was released by the Marlins earlier this month. The hard thrower has big control issues but is certainly worthy of a flyer on a minor league deal. Ellington is currently recovering from a biceps injury and not ready to pitch yet.
Apr 20 - 1:36 PM

Yankees LHP prospect Justus Sheffield gave up two runs over six innings on Thursday in his start for Double-A Trenton.

Sheffield walked two, and he struck out eight. Acquired from Cleveland in the Andrew Miller deal, Sheffield can miss bats with his fastball/slider combination, and he also shows a quality change on occasion as well. His command has unfortunately gone backwards, but it still should be good enough to start. If not, Sheffield could be a terrific reliever, but that should be a long ways away, if ever.
