Ryan Madson pitched a scoreless eighth inning in a tie game Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Madson has pitched the eighth inning in both of his appearances since being acquired by the Nationals. He still could end up with saves if Sean Doolittle gets hurt (always possible) or struggles (seemingly less likely), but he seems to be the clear No. 2 choice at the moment.

Ryan Zimmerman went 0-for-4 and struck out twice in the loss to the Diamondbacks on Friday.

Zimmerman was absolutely awesome for 30 games this year, hitting .435/.475/.907. In the 56 games since, he's been a below average regular, coming in at .259/.307/.406. It's past time that he get dropped behind Daniel Murphy and Anthony Rendon in the Nationals' lineup.

CC Sabathia pitched five innings of one-run ball Friday for the win as the Yankees beat the Mariners 5-1.

Sabathia struggled in his return from the disabled list on July 4, but that's the only time in his last nine starts that he's given up more than two runs. He'll get the Rays next time out, and he's already 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA against them this year.

Andrew Moore gave up five runs and nine hits in six innings Friday in a loss to the Yankees.

Moore turned in three straight quality starts to open his career, but he's given up 10 runs in nine innings his last two times out. The Marco Gonzales addition definitely takes away some of Moore's margin for error; if he doesn't bounce back next time out, a switch could come.

Aaron Judge took Andrew Moore way deep at Safeco on Friday for his first homer of the second half.

It was a three-run shot that barely stayed in Safeco and was estimated at 440 feet. Judge had gone 10 straight games without a homer or extra-base hit of any kind, allowing Giancarlo Stanton to catch him atop the MLB home run leaderboard. Judge is back in front with 31 now.
Jul 22 - 1:10 AM

Whit Merrifield delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th inning as part of Friday’s 7-6 victory over the White Sox.

The game-winner was set up after Tyler Clippard walked Jorge Bonifacio to load the bases. Merrifield drove in three runs on the day, including a two-run double. He also swiped a base, which gives him 16 steals overall. Locked in as the Royals’ primary leadoff hitter, the 28-year-old is a useful and versatile option in deeper mixed fantasy leagues.

Ian Kennedy was tagged for six runs (five earned) over four innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Friday.

It was his shortest outing since May 31. The big blow was a bases-clearing triple from Yoan Moncada in the third inning. Kennedy came into Friday’s outing with four straight starts of at least six innings and three earned runs or fewer allowed. He’ll try to get back on track next week against the Tigers on the road.
Jul 22 - 1:07 AM

James Shields was knocked around for six runs over 4 1/3 innings against the Royals on Friday.

Shields didn’t factor into the decision. He gave up 10 hits (including a solo homer to Mike Moustakas) and walked three. He’s now allowed six runs in three out of his six starts since returning from the disabled list. His days of fantasy relevance appear numbered.
