Tom Wilhelmsen has made the Diamondbacks' Opening Day roster.

The Diamondbacks optioned Ketel Marte to Triple-A Reno to open up a roster spot for the veteran. Wilhelmsen agreed to a minor league deal with Arizona in February and impressed by posting a 0.96 ERA over nine Cactus League outings. He'll be used in middle relief.

Chris Bassitt (elbow) threw two sets of 15 pitches off a mound on Tuesday.

It's another step in Bassitt's recovery from Tommy John surgery. Bassitt still has hurdles to clear, but at least he's been able to avoid setbacks. If Bassitt continues on this trajectory, he should be ready to join the A's around midseason.

Sonny Gray (lat) has been throwing at max effort from 105 feet.

Manager Bob Melvin said Gray feels great and is "asking for more." Despite his progress, the A's are going to play it safe by not rushing Gray in his recovery from a strained lat. The next step for him will be getting back on mound. Gray's best-case scenario is a return in mid-April.

Padres purchased the contract of INF Erick Aybar from Triple-A El Paso.

Aybar has been officially added to the 40-man roster and will be the Opening Day shortstop. The 30-year-old fell off the map last year while batting .243/.303/.320 in 126 games between the Braves and Tigers, but he should have some value in NL-only formats as long as he keeps a starting job.

Blue Jays reassigned LHPs Jeff Beliveau, Chad Girodo, and Tim Mayza, and RHPs Leonel Campos and Casey Lawrence to minor league camp.

All were non-roster invitees in camp. Beliveau, 30, had some success out of the Rays' bullpen a couple of years back. He made his return from labrum surgery last year while posting a 2.54 ERA and 66/29 K/BB ratio over 49 2/3 innings between the Orioles' High-A and Double-A affiliates.

Mariners manager Scott Servais said Tuesday that Shae Simmons has been diagnosed with a flexor strain.

Simmons has been dealing with forearm discomfort for most of the month, but the good news is that there isn't any structural damage involved. Still, the 26-year-old will begin the season on the 10-day disabled list.
Mar 28 - 12:52 PM

Chris Tillman (shoulder) threw again on Tuesday.

Tillman, who recently received a cortisone shot in his shoulder, just resumed throwing on Sunday. He's scheduled to throw again Thursday, though it's unclear when he'll be ready to get back on a mound. His timetable to join the Orioles' rotation will depend on how his shoulder responds in the coming days.

Jhoulys Chacin will start Opening Day for the Padres.

Well, that is something. The Padres could have one of the worst rotations we've seen in a long time, so Chacin is the best option on the board. He'll be followed by Clayton Richard and Jered Weaver. The Padres have yet to make a final decision beyond that, but we will likely see plenty of names shuffled in and out all year.
