Howie Kendrick (oblique) could begin a minor league rehab assignment later this week.

Kendrick took outdoor batting practice Tuesday for the first time since straining an oblique muscle in mid-April. He still has some boxes to check before the Phillies can map out an exact timetable for his return to the active roster. Aaron Altherr has run away with the Phillies' starting left field job over the last month.

Junior Guerra (calf) told reporters that he is preparing to start Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Guerra allowed nine runs -- five earned -- on 17 hits and five walks over 11 1/3 innings on his two-game minor league rehab assignment between Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Colorado Springs. He was very good for the Brewers in 2016, but the jury is still out on what kind of long-term major league starter he can be. Guerra strained his right calf on Opening Day this season and has been on the disabled list since.

Dodgers activated 2B/3B Logan Forsythe from the 10-day disabled list.

Forsythe will return as the Dodgers' fill-in third baseman on Tuesday night against the Cardinals with Justin Turner nursing a Grade 1 hamstring strain. Chris Taylor and Chase Utley will continue to platoon at second base. Forsythe was batting .295/.407/.341 in 54 plate appearances with Los Angeles before landed on the disabled list April 19 with a fracture in his right big toe.

Dodgers optioned RHP Josh Ravin to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Ravin was only in the majors for one game and did not see an appearance. The right-hander has posted good numbers this season in the minor leagues.

Marlins recalled RHP Drew Steckenrider from Triple-A New Orleans.

Steckenrider has posted an impressive 1.25 ERA, 0.785 WHIP, and 26/8 K/BB ratio over 21 2/3 innings of relief this season at Triple-A, but his stay in the bigs might not be a very long one. David Phelps was placed on the bereavement list in a corresponding 25-man roster move.

Marlins placed RHP David Phelps on the bereavement list.

Phelps will miss the Marlins' two-game series against the Athletics following a death in his family. The 30-year-old right-hander has posted a cool 3.68 ERA and 24/8 K/BB ratio in 22 innings of relief this season for Miami and could soon move into the starting rotation.

Danny Valencia (wrist) has been scratched from the Mariners' starting lineup Tuesday.

Valencia is still working through some wrist discomfort related to an awkward slide into third base on Friday night. Taylor Motter is starting at first base and batting sixth Tuesday night against Nationals right-hander Joe Ross.

Aaron Sanchez (finger) has not resumed throwing.

Sanchez landed on the disabled list over the weekend with a laceration (or blister) on his right middle finger. He told reporters Tuesday that he's frustrated by the lingering blister issues but will allow this one to fully heal before ramping up his rehab. It sounds like he'll be out for much longer than 10 days.
