Phillies prospect Ben Lively had an excellent week for Double-A Reading, delivering 16 strikeouts in 13 innings of work.

Lively has exhibited impeccable control, allowing just two walks during that span. He hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his starts this season. Lively is prone to giving up home runs (he's given up 16 long balls since the start of 2014), but that's something he should be able to iron out with more experience.

Rangers recalled RHP Spencer Patton from Triple-A Round Rock.

Patton earned the promotion by posting a 0.96 ERA with 14 strikeouts over 9 1/3 relief innings at Round Rock. He'll pitch in middle relief with the Rangers.

Rangers optioned RHP Roman Mendez to Triple-A Round Rock.

He allowed five runs over his last three appearances to get the boot. Mendez has been replaced in the bullpen by Spencer Patton.

Casey Janssen (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment on Thursday.

It's not clear which affiliate he'll be assigned to. Janssen has already appeared in some extended spring training games but will need to pitch on back-to-back days during his rehab assignment before the Nationals activate him.

Reed Johnson could miss the rest of the season after having surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left foot/lower leg.

The Nationals had indicated that the operation was minor, but that's not the case. They're not ruling out him returning at some point, but it doesn't sound like they're counting on it. Johnson is 4-for-18 this season for Washington.

Anthony Rendon (knee, side) has flown back to Washington, D.C. to have his injured left side examined.

Rendon has been dealing with an oblique issue for a week now while on a rehab assignment with his knee injury. More should be known shortly about how long this will set him back, but it certainly possible that he won't be returning to the Nationals anytime soon. Rendon had been hoping to be activated by now.

The Mets are expected to promote Johnny Monell from Triple-A Las Vegas prior to Tuesday's game.

It's not clear at this point who he'll replace on the roster, as neither Kevin Plawecki nor Anthony Recker are dealing with any known injuries. Monell is batting .397/.455/.638 with four homers at Las Vegas this season.
May 4 - 4:47 PM

Rays prospect Jared Mortensen hasn't allowed a run in his last two starts for Double-A Montgomery.

Mortensen has pitched six innings or more in each of his five starts this season, putting up goose eggs in three of those. The 26-year-old isn't striking out a ton of hitters (no punchouts in his last outing), but he's also not allowing big hits. In 31 innings, the right-hander still hasn't allowed a home run this year. Overall, opponents are hitting .191 against Mortensen in 120 plate appearances.
