Orioles optioned RHP Bud Norris to Double-A Bowie.

The move looks strange on the surface, but Norris has an option remaining and the Orioles don't want him to have a long layoff between starts with the All-Star break coming up. He figures to make one start in Double-A before being called back up. He's eligible to return on on July 20 against the Athletics.

Orioles recalled RHP Preston Guilmet from Triple-A Norfolk.

The move gives the Orioles an extra arm out of their bullpen leading into the All-Star break. Bud Norris was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding roster move.

David Buchanan limited the Brewers to one run over seven innings Thursday in the Phillies' 9-1 victory.

The Brewers were up 1-0 when Buchanan's afternoon came to an end, but they ended up scoring seven times in the top of the eighth and twice more in the ninth to make it look like a laugher. Buchanan moved to 5-5 with a 4.40 ERA. He's done a better job than expected of keeping the Phillies in games, but we'd still have a hard time trusting him in NL-only leagues.

After starting off with six hitless innings, Matt Garza took a loss Thursday against the Phillies, surrendering two runs in 7 2/3 innings.

Those two runs scored after he was pulled in the eighth, and the Phillies went on to have a seven-run inning against Will Smith and Brandon Kintzler. Garza lost the no-hitter when Jimmy Rollins delivered the first of two singles in the seventh. He allowed three hits in all.

Ben Revere pinch-ran Thursday and then stayed in to single in his lone at-bat.

Revere is bothered by soreness in the right ankle he originally injured last year. He might start tomorrow anyway. Tony Gwynn Jr. went 0-for-5 as the Phillies' center fielder today.
Jul 10 - 5:43 PM

Ryan Howard had an RBI double and a two-run homer Thursday against the Brewers.

Both hits came off left-handed relievers. The homer came off the league's worst pitcher in Rule 5 pick Wei-Chung Wang, a guy who really should be in A-ball at the moment, but the double was off an excellent southpaw in Will Smith. Howard entered the day with no homers and just two RBI in his previous 20 games.
Jul 10 - 5:41 PM

Travis d'Arnaud will bat fifth Thursday against the Braves.

And why not? D'Arnaud is batting .300/.340/.560 with three home runs and four doubles in 13 games since returning from the minors. He has earned a promotion in the batting order with his hot-hitting and could stick there if he keeps it up.
Jul 10 - 5:40 PM

Cubs optioned RHP Kyle Hendricks to Triple-A Iowa.

This means that the Cubs have decided to keep Arismendy Alcantara around for a little longer. Hendricks gave up four runs in six innings Thursday in a no-decision against the Reds and should get another shot in the Cubs' rotation after the All-Star break.
