Dodgers RHP prospect Grant Holmes matched a career-high with nine strikeouts Sunday in a no-decision for High-A Rancho Cucamonga.

He scattered four hits and two runs over six innings while allowing just one walk. The 2014 first-round pick is third in the California League with 58 strikeouts this year. Holmes has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last five starts, trimming his ERA from 3.67 to 3.17 over that span. The 20-year-old is still walking too many hitters (19 free passes) but that's something most young pitchers struggle with.

Blue Jays recalled RHP Ryan Tepera from Triple-A Buffalo.

Tepera has surrendered five hits, three walks, and three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings this season out of the Toronto bullpen. He will pitch in middle relief.

Blue Jays designated INF/OF Jimmy Paredes for assignment.

Paredes had an .886 OPS through 17 plate appearances with the Blue Jays, who acquired him off waivers from the Orioles in mid-May. The 27-year-old will probably draw some interest on the waiver wire.

Reds 3B prospect Taylor Sparks clubbed four hits including his fifth home run of the year Sunday in a win for High-A Daytona.

Sparks is 7-for-9 with three homers and seven RBI over his last two games. His average has climbed from .183 to .212 during that stretch. Sparks hasn't had a good season for the Tortugas but maybe Sunday's outburst is a sign that better times are ahead. Five of his last seven hits have gone for extra bases. Sparks hit .247 with 13 blasts last season in his first year with Daytona.

Orioles RHP prospect Matthew Grimes spanned eight shutout innings Sunday in a win for High-A Frederick.

The eight-inning gem was the longest start of his career. Grimes hasn't allowed a run in his last two starts and now leads the Carolina League with seven wins this year. He also owns the league's second-lowest ERA (1.21) and fifth-lowest WHIP (1.06). The 24-year-old has allowed just one earned run during his four-game winning streak. Despite his success, Grimes has only struck out 37 hitters in 59 2/3 innings this year.

Dexter Fowler is out of the Cubs' starting lineup on Monday because of a sore right heel.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said it's a minor thing, so we'll label Fowler as day-to-day for now. Ben Zobrist is hitting leadoff and Jason Heyward is in center field on Monday against Dodgers left-hander Alex Wood.

Matt Duffy was pulled from Monday's game against the Braves after taking a pitch off his left wrist.

Duffy stayed in to run initially following a meeting with the Giants' trainer, but Kelby Tomlinson took over at third base when the inning turned. There should be an update from the Giants after the game. Duffy finished 0-for-2 with the HBP on Monday in Atlanta.

Nationals RHP prospect Reynaldo Lopez set a career-high with 12 strikeouts Sunday in a no-decision for Double-A Harrisburg.

Lopez made the most of his five innings of work, allowing just five hits and one earned run. The 22-year-old didn't walk a batter for the first time all season. Though he's won just one game and his ERA is over four, Lopez has certainly piled on the strikeouts this year. He leads the Eastern League with 56 punch-outs in just 47 2/3 innings. Lopez hasn't put it all together yet but he definitely has the velocity and raw talent to make an impact at the next level.
