Nick Castellanos hit a two-run homer in the Tigers' 5-4 win over the Orioles on Wednesday.

The hand contusion that knocked Castellanos out of Tuesday's game obviously wasn't a lingering issue. The sophomore hit cleanup for the Tigers today, though he'll probably open the regular season in the seventh spot in the lineup if everyone is healthy.

Anibal Sanchez tossed a pair of scoreless innings Wednesday in his start versus the Orioles.

Sanchez was last seen pitching out of the pen in the postseason for the Tigers, but he'll be back as the team's No. 3 starter this year. Since he'll go quite a bit later in drafts than he did last spring, he makes for a much better investment.
Mar 4 - 4:36 PM

Anthony Gose went 2-for-3 and scored from the leadoff spot Wednesday versus the Orioles.

Brad Ausmus knows that baseball's dirtiest word is "platoon," so he hasn't committed to starting Gose in center field against right-handers and Rajai Davis against left-handers, even though that would seem to make the most sense. It's also not yet certain where Gose will hit when he does play. Given his track record, he should hit eighth or ninth until he shows he's worth moving up. However, he might make some appearances batting first or second early on.

J.J. Hardy went 2-for-2 with a walk as the Orioles' No. 2 hitter Wednesday versus the Tigers.

We won't read too much into it, but it's a little curious that Hardy hit second and Manny Machado occupied the seventh spot today. It's typically been Machado hitting second while healthy the last couple of years. Hardy, while moderately productive for a shortstop, has finished with OBPs of .282, .306 and .309 the last three years. Probably best just not to read much into it.

Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters that Wilmer Flores (wrist, hand) is "fine."

Flores was lifted from Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Braves after taking a pitch off his lower left arm. MLB.com's Anthony DiComo says there appeared to be "nothing lingering" from the HBP.
Mar 4 - 4:24 PM

Odubel Herrera went 3-for-4 with three steals and two runs scored to lead the Phillies to a 3-1 win over the Yankees on Wednesday.

Herrera, a .321 hitter in Double-A in the Rangers system last year, is probably the best bet of any Rule 5 pick to stick this spring. He'll likely be a reserve outfielder initially, but with the Phillies in transition and certainly open to selling off veterans, he should get an opportunity to start if he hits.
Mar 4 - 3:48 PM

Nathan Eovaldi yielded one run and two hits in two innings Wednesday in his start versus the Phillies.

Eovaldi got his one strikeout on a pretty good splitter, so that was nice to see. He also had his usual velocity today, topping out at 98 mph. The Yankees will be working with him on his offspeed stuff all spring.
Mar 4 - 3:45 PM

Carlos Beltran (elbow) will make his Grapefruit League debut on Friday.

The Yankees are understandably easing Beltran into things this spring, as he turns 38 in April and is coming back from surgery to remove loose pieces and a bone spur from his right elbow. He's hoping for better results in his second season in the Bronx.
