Andrew Knapp has been named the Phillies' backup catcher.

Knapp beat out Ryan Hanigan and Bryan Holaday for the job. The 25-year-old batted .266/.330/.390 with eight home runs and 46 RBI in 107 games last season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Angels reassigned OF Eric Young Jr., OF Shane Robinson, RHP Jose Valdez, RHP Deolis Guerra, INF Rey Navarro, and C Tony Sanchez to minor league camp.

No big shockers among this round of cuts from Angels camp. Young put up an .882 OPS in 46 at-bats this spring in Cactus League play, but he was always a longshot for a backup outfield job. The 31-year-old is a .246/.314/.327 career hitter at the major league level.

Phillies released C Bryan Holaday.

Holaday was told Monday that he would not be on the Phillies' Opening Day roster, so he exercised his opt-out clause. The 29-year-old catcher is a .245/.282/.346 career hitter in 411 plate appearances at the major league level.
Mar 27 - 2:02 PM

Royals reassigned RHP Al Alburquerque, RHP Malcom Culver, C Zane Evans, and INF Humberto Arteaga to minor league camp.

Alburquerque was in Royals camp this spring on a non-guaranteed minor league deal and posted a 4.15 ERA across 8 2/3 innings in the Cactus League. It looks like right-hander Peter Moylan will get the final spot in the Kansas City bullpen.
Mar 27 - 1:58 PM

Royals optioned OF Billy Burns to Triple-A Omaha.

Burns, a .271/.309/.355 career hitter, went 9-for-41 (.220) this spring in the Cactus League. The 27-year-old speedster will function as organizational outfield depth for Kansas City in 2017.
Mar 27 - 1:54 PM

Royals optioned LHP Scott Alexander to Triple-A Omaha.

Matt Strahm, Travis Wood, and Mike Minor are all left-handed, so Alexander will get left out for an Opening Day bullpen spot. He posted a 1.93 ERA and 0.86 WHIP over 9 1/3 innings this spring in the Cactus League.
Mar 27 - 1:51 PM

Royals optioned OF/DH Peter O'Brien to Triple-A Omaha.

O'Brien has been one of the best players in the Cactus League this spring, boasting a 1.127 OPS with seven home runs in 51 at-bats, but he was always a longshot to crack the Opening Day roster. If something goes wrong with Brandon Moss, or he isn't hitting left-handed pitching, look for O'Brien to get the call as DH help.
Mar 27 - 1:48 PM

Joe Wendle (shoulder) took regular batting practice Monday in A's camp.

It was the first BP round in a while for the 26-year-old infielder, who's been held out of Cactus League action since March 7 due to a shoulder injury. He figures to open the 2017 season on the disabled list.
