Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Saturday that Matt Joyce (concussion) has been symptom-free for a couple days.
Joyce should be ready to return soon, but with the addition of David Murphy, Shane Victorino and David DeJesus, there's really no longer a role for him. He's a candidate to be designated for assignment. Joyce is batting just .178/.274/.298 on the season.
Yan Gomes is not in the Indians' lineup Sunday.
It's a simple day off. Roberto Perez will catch in Gomes' place.
Jason Kipnis is not in the Indians' lineup Sunday.
Kipnis has been serving as the designated hitter of late due to a sore right shoulder and now he's out of the lineup altogether. Carlos Santana is the DH Sunday, with Jerry Sands covering first base.
Brandon Morrow (shoulder) will receive a second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache this week.
Morrow was scratched from his rehab start last Thursday due to more shoulder discomfort. A subsequent exam by Padres team physician Dr. Heinz Hoenecke on Friday resulted in a diagnosis of shoulder inflammation, which is what Morrow has been dealing with for three months. However, he wants to get another opinion to see if anything else is going on. The right-hander would seem to be a long shot to pitch for the Padres again this season.
Chase Utley (ankle) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday.
Utley has been ramping up baseball activities since the All-Star break and is now ready to test things out in game action. He's hitting just .179/.257/.275 this season but reportedly discovered a mechanical flaw in his swing that he thinks was caused by his nagging ankle injury. Utley could be an August trade candidate if he turns things around at the plate.
Yasiel Puig is not in the Dodgers' lineup Sunday.
He's just getting a day off. Andre Ethier has shifted over to right field in Puig's place, while Carl Crawford is getting a start in left.
Dodgers optioned RHP Yimi Garcia to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
He's making room for Mat Latos on the roster. Garcia was scored upon in four out of his last five appearances.
Cubs designated RHP Yoervis Medina for assignment.
Medina has struggled this season between the Mariners and Cubs, posting a 4.71 ERA and 16/11 K/BB ratio over 21 innings. However, he held a sub-3.00 ERA each of the last two seasons in Seattle and throws in the mid-90s, so it wouldn't be a surprise if he draws interest on waivers.
