Jordany Valdespin went 2-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored as the Marlins' leadoff man Friday in a 5-3 win over the Red Sox.

Valdespin probably won't have a spot on the Marlins' Opening Day roster, but his bat remains intriguing. Last year, he had a really impressive 29/36 K/BB ratio in 265 plate appearances while hitting .270/.374/.437 in Triple-A. That's a huge improvement from, say, 2011, when he came in at 110/32 in 670 plate appearances for the Mets' Triple-A club. If he gets another chance at some point, he could surprise.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Josh Rutledge is viewed as the favorite for the Angels' second base job.

It's not really a revelation, as Rutledge has looked like the obvious favorite since camp opened. He's competing with Johnny Giavotella, Taylor Featherston and Grant Green for the gig. Rutledge doesn't have nearly as much fantasy appeal in Anaheim as he did in Denver, but he could still carve out some usefulness in fantasy leagues as a middle infielder.

Koji Uehara allowed one run and three hits in his inning Friday against the Marlins in his spring debut.

The Red Sox failed to land a shutdown eighth-inning guy this winter, keeping all of their eggs in Uehara's basket. He was so great prior to last August that it'd be crazy to write him off. Still, it'd be nice if Boston had a better backup plan.

Mike Montgomery pitched a perfect ninth for the save as the Rays edged the Twins 2-1 on Friday.

Montgomery, once a top prospect in the Royals chain before coming over in the James Shields trade, is getting a look as a reliever this spring. It's hard to see him winning a spot in the crowded Tampa Bay pen, but he has a better chance of helping out later as a reliever than he did as a starter.
Mar 6 - 4:24 PM

Tommy Milone pitched two scoreless innings Friday in his start versus the Rays.

The Twins have already made it clear that they don't see Mike Pelfrey as a reliever, suggesting that Milone might be on the outside looking in at the rotation when the season begins. He does seem like a better bet than Pelfrey to us, but given that he's a flyball pitcher set to work in front of a dreadful defensive outfield, he's still not a very appealing option.

Junior Lake left Friday's game against the Reds after hitting the second base bag awkwardly when he advanced on a wild pitch.

Lake was on the ground in pain for a bit but eventually walked off without any apparent issues. The Cubs should update his status soon, but it appears he'll be fine.
Mar 6 - 4:20 PM

Lucas Duda (oblique) hopes to be game-ready early next week.

As it turns out, Duda just hit off a tee and took some soft tosses Friday and didn't take batting practice as originally reported. It's nonetheless a nice step as the slugger works his way back from an oblique strain. Duda will have plenty of time to get ready for Opening Day as long as he doesn't have a setback.
Mar 6 - 3:36 PM

Alex Castellanos exited Friday's game versus the Tigers after being hit by a pitch on the right middle finger.

Castellanos immediately crumpled to the ground after being plunked by the Luke Putkonen offering. The non-roster invitee has been sent for X-rays.
