The Nationals have had internal discussions about Daniel Murphy and Asdrubal Cabrera but no deal appears close, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

The Nats are in need of an infielder with Ryan Zimmerman out for most of the rest of the regular season, and both Murphy and Cabrera would allow Anthony Rendon to remain at third base while pushing Danny Espinosa back to a bench role. Murphy would be a nice upgrade but would be tough to do within the same division, while Cabrera is a free agent after the season.

Pedro Moura of the Orange County Register said Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti strongly indicated Matt Kemp wouldn't be dealt before Thursday's trade deadline.

Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times quoted Colletti as saying, "No one's ever heard me say we're shopping Matt Kemp. That's all in another world." The Kemp rumors have generally been one-sided, with the Dodgers playing the role of the team listening, so it stands to reason that Kemp will remain with the club barring a strong offer before the deadline.

Jason Heyward (back) is expected to be out of the Braves lineup until Friday at the earliest.

His back soreness has kept him out of two straight games, and Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said he'll likely give Heyward another day off Thursday to get right. "We talked about it today and he’s still not feeling well," Gonzalez said of Heyward. "If he comes in tomorrow and he’s not feeling well, I’m not doing it, I’m not running him in there." Even with the days off, a DL stint doesn't appear to be in the cards for Heyward at this point.

A source tells Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press that it appears Josh Willingham is "staying put" with the Twins through the trade deadline.

Berardino also notes that a deal during the August waiver trading period is still a possibility. The outfielder is hitting .225/.367/.439 this year. A report from ESPN's Jerry Crasnick earlier Wednesday said the club is hopeful to move Willingham this season.

Max Scherzer improved to 13-3, holding the White Sox to one run over seven innings as the Tigers enjoyed an easy 7-2 win on Wednesday.

Scherzer appears to have found some consistency. Now in his last seven starts, the impending free agent has a 2.08 ERA over 47 2/3 innings. On Wednesday, he limited the White Sox to five hits and a walk while striking out six. As a result, he lowered his overall ERA to 3.27. He has a 1.17 WHIP and a 167/41 K/BB ratio to go along with it. Scherzer will toe the rubber at Yankee Stadium on Monday.

Hector Noesi fell to 5-8 after yielding six runs over six innings in a loss to the Tigers on Wednesday.

All six runs came in an ugly first inning in which Noesi allowed six hits (five singles and a three-run home run) and walked two batters. From the second through the sixth, Noesi put up goose eggs. Overall, the right-hander allowed 10 hits, walked three, and struck out three. It hasn't been a great season for Noesi, as he has a 5.21 ERA, a 1.48 WHIP, and a 78/41 K/BB ratio. He'll try to bounce back against the Rangers at home on Monday.

Adam Dunn homered in garbage time in Wednesday's loss to the Tigers, his only hit in four at-bats.

The White Sox went into the ninth inning trailing by six runs, and Dunn made it five with a one-out solo home run off of Al Alburquerque. Dunn has homered in back-to-back ballgames, giving him 17 on the season along with 44 RBI and a .230/.362/.450 slash line.
Jul 30 - 10:31 PM

Torii Hunter singled three times in four at-bats, scoring twice and driving in a run, in an easy win against the White Sox on Wednesday.

Hunter is sad to see the month of July come to a close. Going into Thursday afternoon's game, he is hitting .353 (30-for-85) in July. The 39-year-old outfielder has brought his numbers back towards respectability, now slashing .277/.304/.463 with 14 home runs and 61 RBI.
