Taylor Jungmann fell to the Cubs on Friday after giving up three runs (two earned) in 5 2/3 innings.

Jungmann threw a career-high 112 pitches. While he failed to make it out of the sixth inning, he pitched fairly well, allowing seven hits and two walks while notching seven strikeouts. The 25-year-old has held his own during his first stint in the majors, posting a 2.23 ERA and 53/21 K/BB ratio in 64 2/3 innings over 10 starts. However, we're still a bit hesitant about trusting him in mixed fantasy leagues.

Hector Rondon tossed a scoreless ninth inning Friday against the Brewers for his 15th save of the season.

Rondon struck out one batter in the frame and worked around a one-out single from Shane Peterson to lock down the victory. Cubs manager Joe Maddon backed off Rondon for a stretch, but he has now gone to him for saves in each of the last three days. While he has reestablished himself as the team's closer, look for him to get a day off Saturday.

Anthony Rizzo went 2-for-3 with a solo homer, a walk, and two runs scored in Friday's win over the Brewers.

Rizzo has now gone deep in each of the last three games. The 25-year-old had just one home run in 31 games prior to this recent power surge.
Aug 1 - 1:16 AM

Starlin Castro knocked in two runs against the Brewers on Friday.

Castro had an RBI single in the second inning before hitting into a fielder's choice in the fourth inning to drive in another run. The 25-year-old was in the middle of trade discussions this week, but the Cubs are surely hoping he'll breathe a bit easier now that the deadline has passed. He owns a disappointing .237/.271/.304 batting line on the year.

Ryan Braun smacked a solo homer Friday against the Cubs.

His first-inning blast against Jason Hammel was the only offense of the game for the Brewers. Braun had a fairly quiet July overall, but he has three home runs over his last seven games.
Aug 1 - 1:15 AM

Nick Martinez allowed two runs over 6 1/3 innings in Friday's 6-3 win over the Giants.

Martinez allowed runs in the first and second, but managed to hold the Giants off the board the rest of the way. He struck out four and walked a pair en route to his first win since way back on June 9. The 24-year-old has faded since a hot start to the season and now owns a 4.01 ERA and 68/41 K/BB ratio over 112 1/3 innings. Derek Holland (shoulder) could take Martinez's rotation spot before long, but he lines up for a start against the Astros next week at home.

Madison Bumgarner was tagged for six runs over seven innings in a loss to the Rangers on Friday.

Bumgarner gave up a two-run homer to Adrian Beltre in the first inning and a four-spot in the second. Frustration appeared to boil over for him in the fourth inning, as he incited a benches-clearing incident after Delino DeShields flipped his bat on a pop-up. Bumgarner settled down from there, but the damage was already done in this one. The southpaw fanned eight and walked none in the loss and now sits at 11-6 with a 3.39 ERA on the year. He'll face the Braves next Wednesday on the road.

Adrian Beltre went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer Friday against the Giants.

Beltre's two-run shot off Madison Bumgarner gave the Rangers the lead in the bottom of the first inning and they never looked back. It was just his second home run in 32 games since returning from his thumb injury. He recently admitted that he's not getting better, so expectations should be tempered for him the rest of the way.
