Yasmany Tomas will undergo season-ending core muscle surgery on Tuesday.

Tomas first went on the disabled list back in early June and encountered multiple setbacks along the way. It amounts to a lost season for the 26-year-old, as he hit only .241/.294/.464 with eight homers while being limited to 47 games. The Diamondbacks tried to trade Tomas last winter and it wouldn't be a surprise if they try again this winter, although the market for him might not be there.

Mitch Moreland was scratched from the Red Sox' lineup Monday due to a sore neck.

Moreland passed concussion protocol following a collision with Brett Gardner on Sunday, but his neck is a little sore. He's day-to-day.

Jason Kipnis is not in the Indians' lineup Monday.

He's just getting a breather. Kipnis has finally been heating up with a six-game hitting streak, which included a three-game home run streak.

David Price (elbow) played catch from 60 feet on Monday.

Price was shut down for a while due to ongoing stiffness in his left elbow but is apparently experiencing improvement. He's hoping to feel well enough to play catch again on Tuesday and would progress his throwing program from there. The Red Sox remain hopeful that he'll rejoin their rotation this season, but there are no guarantees.

Marc Carig of Newsday reports that Steven Matz has been pitching through pain all season due to a nerve issue in his left elbow and could require surgery.

Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reported previously that Matz might be dealing with an arthritic left elbow, while Carig hears it's a issue similar to the one Jacob deGrom dealt with last season. Matz was given an injection Monday and the hope is that he'll return to pitch this year, but it sounds like surgery is on the table if the shot doesn't help. The left-hander has had a long history of elbow problems and has posted an ugly 6.07 ERA over 13 starts this season.

George Kontos was unavailable Sunday due to a tight groin, but he worked out pregame Monday and is ready to go.

Kontos has allowed just one run while striking out seven over five innings since the Pirates claimed him off waivers. He'll continue to operate in middle relief.

Cody Bellinger (ankle) won't return to the Dodgers' lineup until at least Wednesday.

Bellinger's right ankle is still swollen after he sprained it Saturday, and he'll miss at least three games. The rookie will be re-evaluated Wednesday to see if he's ready to go then or needs more time. The Dodgers can obviously afford to proceed cautiously here given their 20-game lead in the National League West.

Orioles released INF Paul Janish.

Janish is retiring from baseball and will take a coaching position at Rice University starting next season. The 34-year-old hit only .212/.280/.284 over parts of nine seasons in the majors, but he was able to sustain a nice little career on the strength of his glove and versatility.
