Giants OLB Jonathan Casillas left Saturday's preseason game with a rib injury.
Casillas is headed for X-rays. He logged three tackles before exiting in the first quarter. Casillas has been a standout at training camp and is expected to start at weak side linebacker this year. It would be a big loss for the Giants.
Colts CB Darius Butler left Saturday's preseason game with a left ankle injury.
He's done for the night. Before getting hurt, Butler intercepted a pass that was dropped by Eagles wideout Nelson Agholor. Butler had his ankle wrapped on the sideline, suggesting his exit may have been precautionary. The Colts can't afford another injury to their secondary with Vontae Davis (ankle) already on the shelf.
Joe Flacco completed 11-of-16 passes for 94 yards in Baltimore's third preseason game.
Flacco was making his first appearance since Week 11 last year. He looked fully healthy, showing no ill-effects after taking an early sack. Flacco's night was impressive considering his supporting cast. He's a high-floor QB2.
Paxton Lynch will be the Broncos' No. 2 quarterback for Saturday's preseason game against the Rams.
Trevor Siemian will draw the start with Mark Sanchez slotting in as the third-string QB. The pieces of Denver's quarterback puzzle are starting to come together with Siemian the favorite to start Week 1 and Sanchez now fighting for his roster spot. Lynch has done some good things this preseason, completing 21-of-33 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns. He could put heat on Siemian with another strong showing on Saturday.
Ben Watson suffered a torn Achilles' in Saturday's preseason game.
Watson went down on the first play of the night. It's a huge blow to a pass game that relies heavily on tight ends. The Ravens could end up getting nothing on the two-year, $7 million deal they gave Watson this offseason. With Dennis Pitta and Maxx Williams sidelined, Baltimore is down to Crockett Gillmore.
Eagles rookie Carson Wentz (ribs) is expected to play in the team's preseason finale.
He could conceivably get the whole game, because Sam Bradford isn't going to play much or at all, and Chase Daniel doesn't need the work. Wentz suffered a rib injury in the Eagles' preseason opener. He resumed throwing passes at full speed on Friday and participated in pre-game warmups Saturday evening.
49ers coach Chip Kelly continues to claim the team's quarterback competition remains open.
Blaine Gabbert has done nothing to run with the job, but Colin Kaepernick has somehow done even less. All signs have pointed to Gabbert under center for the opener for weeks now. Kap has seemed checked out of San Francisco since last season, and has seen his on-field performance deteriorate at an alarming rate. All he's really accomplished this summer is setting off constitutional debates on Twitter.
49ers waived/released WR Jerome Simpson, WR DiAndre Campbell, RB Kendall Gaskins, DL Darren Lake, K John Lunsford, LB Wynton McManis, OL Blake Muir, OL Ian Silberman and CB Cleveland Wallace.
Simpson was due $885,000 after catching five balls in six games last season. The appearances were the oft-suspended wideout's first since 2013. Now on the wrong side of 30, Simpson is at the end of the line of what's been a career full of missed opportunities.
