Carlos Martinez held the Reds to just one run over six innings in a 5-2 victory on Saturday.

Facing the Reds for a second straight start, Martinez gave up just three hits and a pair of walks while notching three strikeouts. The only run scored on a solo homer from Zack Cozart in the fifth inning. The 23-year-old owns a 2.08 ERA with a 13/5 K/BB ratio over his first 13 innings of work this season. He's likely going to face an innings limit, but there's breakout potential here.
Apr 18 - 6:00 PM

Making his season debut, Homer Bailey (elbow) was touched up for five runs over 5 2/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Cardinals.

Bailey looked very rusty, giving up nine hits and three walks while failing to strike out a batter. This was the first time since September 23, 2009 that he didn't record a strikeout in a start. On the bright side, his velocity was only a tick below normal and he still induced eight swinging strikes. We probably wouldn't start him quite yet in mixed leagues, but there's obviously reason to hold on to him.

Trevor Rosenthal worked around some trouble Saturday against the Reds for his fourth save of the season.

After entering the ninth with a three-run lead, Rosenthal gave up a one-out single to Zack Cozart before walking pinch-hitter Brennan Boesch. However, he was able to get Kris Negron to ground out and Joey Votto to strike out looking to end it. The 24-year-old can be wild at times, but he has allowed just one run in 5 2/3 innings so far and has yet to blow a save.

Giants placed RHP Jake Peavy on the 15-day disabled list with a back strain.

It's the right move as Peavy hasn't looked right in either of his two starts this season. With Ryan Vogelsong already filling in for Matt Cain (flexor tendon strain), Yusmeiro Petit seems likely to replace Peavy in the starting rotation. Andrew Susac was called up from Triple-A to take Peavy's roster spot.
Apr 18 - 5:59 PM

Matt Carpenter went 2-for-4 with a two-run double Saturday's win over the Reds.

There might not be a hotter hitter than Carpenter right now. He now has six straight multi-hit games and has more doubles (seven) than Albert Pujols, Victor Martinez, Jose Bautista, and Yasiel Puig have hits, just to name a few. He's hitting .390 so far.
Apr 18 - 5:58 PM

Jason Heyward connected for a solo homer Saturday against the Reds.

It was his first home run of the season and his only hit in four at-bats on Saturday. Hitting .227 through 10 games, Heyward is off to a slow start with his new team, but this isn't something out of the ordinary. He came into Saturday's action with a .729 OPS between March and April for his career. Things should get better as the calendar flips to May and beyond.
Apr 18 - 5:58 PM

Zack Cozart went 3-for-4 with a solo homer in Saturday's loss to the Cardinals.

His fifth-inning blast off Carlos Martinez was his first home run of the season and the only offense of the game for the Reds. The 29-year-old has hit safely in seven straight games and is batting .368 (14-for-38) on the young season, but with his poor plate discipline, it's unlikely to last.
Apr 18 - 5:57 PM

Giants recalled C Andrew Susac from Triple-A Fresno.

Susac lost the backup catcher job to Hector Sanchez this spring. He probably won't be up long.
