Justin Verlander turned back the clock Wednesday, striking out 10 while spinning eight frames of one-run ball in a 2-1 victory over the Rays.

Asdrubal Cabrera got to Verlander with a solo shot in the fifth inning, but it was the only extra-base hit and just one of four baserunners he yielded all day. Verlander was really struggling initially after coming off the disabled list, but he's now allowed only one run over eight innings in each of his last two outings. It's the first time since July of 2012 that he's accomplished that feat. He'll try to keep it going next week against the Royals.

Joakim Soria converted his 23rd save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning in Wednesday's win over the Rays.

Soria plunked Evan Longoria with a pitch with two outs but was able to get Tim Beckham to go down swinging to end it. It's been a nice season for the veteran reliever, as he boasts a 2.85 ERA and has nailed down 23 of 26 save opportunities. Soria could get traded this week if the Tigers decide to sell.

Red Sox LHP prospect Brian Johnson scattered four hits and three walks over 6 1/3 scoreless frames Tuesday in a win for Triple-A Pawtucket.

He threw a season-high 100 pitches and finished with six strikeouts. The 24-year-old has been among the best pitchers in Triple-A this year. His 2.54 ERA is third-lowest in the International League. He also has the league's lowest WHIP (1.10) and the sixth-highest strikeout total (87). Johnson failed to impress in his Red Sox debut July 21 at Houston (4 1/3 IP, 3 H, 4 BB, 4 ER) but he should have plenty more chances to prove himself in the bigs.

Chris Archer took a loss Wednesday despite striking out 11 and allowing just two unearned runs against the Tigers.

Archer was fantastic, yielding just three singles and not walking anyone. Unfortunately, Asdrubal Cabrera made an error in the seventh inning that led to the Tigers' only two runs and Detroit made it hold up. Archer is now sporting a 9-8 record despite a 2.54 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 173/33 K/BB ratio over 141 2/3 innings. He'll take on the White Sox on the road next.

Gregory Polanco departed Wednesday's game versus the Twins due to left knee discomfort.

He didn't appear to suffer the injury on one play, although it's worth noting that he had an issue with the same knee last month after banging into the outfield wall. More should be known on Polanco after Wednesday's game.

Asdrubal Cabrera belted a solo homer in Wednesday's loss to the Tigers.

Cabrera's solo shot in the fifth inning represented the lone run for the Rays. He also gave it back and then some, as a crucial error by the shortstop in the seventh led to the Tigers' only two runs. Cabrera is batting just .231/.281/.373 for Tampa this season.

Rangers OF prospect Lewis Brinson bopped two homers Tuesday in a win for High-A Desert.

The reigning California League Player of the Week has left the yard three times in his last two games. He's hit an incredible .600 during his seven-game hitting streak (18-for-30). Brinson has watched his average rise from .302 to .337 over that stretch. Brinson is second in the league in average, slugging percentage (.627) and OPS (1.044). He trails Lancaster's A.J. Reed in all three categories.

Jay Bruce - OF - Reds

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Mets "have their sights clearly on a big bat."

Heyman lists Justin Upton, Carlos Gonzalez, Carlos Gomez, Gerardo Parra and Jay Bruce as possibilities that they're considering. He adds that the Reds at one point were showing interest in Zack Wheeler (elbow) in a potential trade for Bruce. It was Heyman who reported over the weekend that the Mets were unwilling to meet the Padres' asking price for Upton, but it sounds like the two sides haven't given up on getting something done.
