Seth Smith (ankle) was a precautionary scratch on Monday, but is not expected to miss any significant time.

Smith's getting a scheduled off-day on Tuesday. It looks like he should be good to go for the season-opener.

Jayson Werth (shoulder) indicated that he wasn't sure when he would be able to return.

Werth saw his first action of the spring on Monday, going 1-for-2 in a minor league game. He's recovering from a January shoulder surgery to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder. While he said he felt good following the game, he also noted that he didn't know how things would progress moving forward. Uncertainty aside, all signs point toward Opening Day or shortly thereafter for the veteran.

Twins optioned LHP Aaron Thompson to Triple-A Rochester.

Thompson pitched well this spring, with a 2.11 ERA in 8+ innings. He'll serve as organizational depth for the Twins.
Mar 31 - 9:22 AM

Marlins reassigned 2B Jordany Valdespin to minor league camp.

Valdespin had a great spring, hitting .378/.425/.595 in 37 at-bats, but he was a long-shot to make the Opening Day roster barring injuries. In his major league career, he's a .218/.273/.372 hitter. As always, be weary of the apparitions of spring.

Humberto Quintero will not be opting out of his minor league contract with the Red Sox.

Manager John Farrell told Quintero that the team still had not settled on a second catcher. Quintero's struggled this spring, hitting only .188/.278/.250 in 16 at-bats, but he's apparently holding out hope that he could still make the big club. Ryan Hanigan is the team's projected starter, with Sandy Leon and Quintero acting as potential back-ups. Prospect Blake Swihart lurks in the background.

J.J. Hardy said that his shoulder was feeling "a lot better" than on Monday.

Hardy underwent an MRA on the left shoulder on Monday, which revealed a muscle strain. He's being shut down from baseball activities for the next ten days. While it's feeling better, Hardy won't be swinging a bat until the swelling is reduced. He should be able to field grounders while he waits. In the meantime, Everth Cabrera should fill in as starter. In deeper AL-only leagues, Cabrera's speed could make him a short-term asset.
Mar 31 - 8:53 AM

Pirates reassigned RHP Blake Wood to minor league camp.

Wood was knocked around for five runs in 7+ innings during Spring Training. This is par for the course, as he posted a 4.46 ERA in the minors last season. Barring a rash of injuries on the Pirates' big league club, he'll serve as organizational depth.
Mar 31 - 8:48 AM

Pirates optioned RHP Rob Scahill to Triple-A Indianapolis.

The team acquired Scahill from the Rockies in November. He has a career 4.42 ERA and a 35/21 K/BB ratio over 57 innings in the majors. The right-hander will serve as organizational depth for the Pirates.
