Chris Denorfia (hamstring) has yet to be cleared to return to game action.

Denorfia took batting practice on Tuesday but hasn't given the go-ahead to play in games yet. He hasn't played since March 17 due to a sore left hamstring and is looking unlikely to be ready for Opening Day. "Opening Day is still in jeopardy," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "You have to figure that out when you fill out the roster, too."

Josh Hamilton (shoulder) has been hitting off a tee.

He has not, however, been cleared for any other baseball activity as he works his way back from surgery in early February to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder. Hamilton, of course, is also facing a suspension after suffering a relapse over the offseason.

Jesse Crain (shoulder) has yet to resume throwing off a mound.

Crain felt soreness in his shoulder following a minor league appearance on March 18 and has been limited to playing catch since then. He'll stay back in extended spring training and it's unclear how long he'll be out. "But I'm moving forward again," said Crain. "Obviously, when you first come in, you feel like there's a chance, as I was doing so well. ... I don't want to rush it, and [I want to] make sure I'm there and there for good when it happens."

Giants designated OF Gary Brown for assignment.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Justin Maxwell. Brown is a former top prospect who has shown some pop and plenty of speed in the minors, but he had been slated to return to Triple-A for a third straight season after being optioned over the weekend. Still just 26, it's possible he'll draw some interest on waivers.

Giants purchased the contract of OF Justin Maxwell from Triple-A Sacramento.

Maxwell earned a spot by batting .349 with a couple homers this spring. He could get some playing time against left-handers early on in the season with Hunter Pence (forearm) sidelined.

Devin Mesoraco (quad) is tentatively scheduled to return to the lineup on Wednesday.

"I'm optimistically thinking that he'll be ready to play tomorrow," Reds manager Bryan Price said Tuesday morning. "[What I don't want to do with injured players] is to put them in there and find out they can't go, or shouldn't go." Mesoraco's left quad tightened up on him during Sunday's game, but he's improved since then and is expected to be fine for Opening Day.

Carlos Gomez will begin the season as the Brewers' leadoff hitter.

That means Scooter Gennett will be moved down to the No. 7 spot, hurting his fantasy value. Gomez will obviously have fewer chances to drive in runs in the leadoff spot, but he should also score a few more runs and possibly run a bit more. While this is manager Ron Roenicke's plan going into the season, it's always possible he'll eventually shake things up and put Gomez into a run-producing spot.

Matt Albers and Geovany Soto have been informed that they've made the White Sox' Opening Day roster.

Neither move comes as a surprise, as they both basically just had to stay healthy this spring and they were going to make the team. Albers held a 5.14 ERA this spring but struck out nine over seven innings, while Soto hit .286/.444/.500 with one homer. Albers will work in middle relief, while Soto will back up Tyler Flowers.
