Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe hers from a source that Pablo Sandoval faces "significant" surgery on his left shoulder.

The Red Sox have yet to announce the details of the surgery, but Abraham hears that the "odds are against" Sandoval playing this season. The Red Sox haven't missed him in the early part of the season, as Travis Shaw has taken advantage of regular playing time at third base by batting .322/.390/.533 over 25 games.

Jed Lowrie (calf) is available off the bench Monday against the Mariners.

Lowrie is still dealing with a bit of a calf issue, so the A's are being cautious. Chris Coghlan is starting at second base Monday while Mark Canha will play third.

Pablo Sandoval will require surgery on his ailing left shoulder.

Sandoval got the bad news Monday during a follow-up exam with Dr. James Andrews. The extent of the damage isn't yet known, but Travis Shaw is now locked in as the regular third baseman. Sandoval is still owed $53 million from 2017-2019 with $17 million club option or a $5 million buyout for 2020.

Charlie Furbush (shoulder) threw 10-12 pitches off the mound on Sunday.

Furbush began the year on the disabled list with left shoulder tightness, but he's getting closer to facing live hitters. He'll require a minor league rehab assignment prior to being activated.
May 2 - 7:23 PM

Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) felt good after throwing in the outfield on Sunday.

Benoit has been sidelined for about a week and a half with with right shoulder inflammation, but he could be ready for a bullpen session by the end of the week. The veteran reliever should be back sometime this month if all goes well.
May 2 - 7:21 PM

Robbie Erlin (elbow) underwent an MRI on Monday.

Erlin landed on the disabled list late last month with a left elbow strain and recently had a setback. The results of the MRI aren't yet known, but he's obviously not close to returning.
May 2 - 7:18 PM

John Lamb (back) was scratched from Monday's scheduled start with Triple-A Louisville.

This likely means that Lamb will start Tuesday vs. the Giants in place of Jon Moscot, who is dealing with a shoulder issue. Lamb began the season the season on the disabled list following back surgery and has posted an ugly 9.22 ERA through three starts in Triple-A. Regardless, he has long-term upside and should be worth a look in NL-only leagues if he gets the call.
May 2 - 7:16 PM

Domingo Santana was scratched from Monday's lineup against the Angels with right shoulder tightness.

It's probably safe to call him day-to-day. Alex Presley will start in his place in right field and hit leadoff.
