The Chicago Tribune suggests rookie RB Ka'Deem Carey may not be active on game days to open the season.

Carey was beaten out by Shaun Draughn for Chicago's primary backup tailback job, and No. 4 back Senorise Perry has more special teams value. Carey was one of the most disappointing rookies in the NFL during the 2014 preseason.

Free agent CB Champ Bailey plans to continue playing following his Saturday release from the Saints.

"Definitely and he is fully healthy now," were the words of Bailey's agent. "He had a plantar (foot) problem which is resolved. He just missed too much time for the coach's evaluation to be complete." Although Bailey's agent is projecting optimism, it's ominous that Bailey was dealing with a foot issue after his foot limited him to five games for the Broncos in 2013. Now 36, Bailey will have to prove he's 100 percent before another team takes a shot on him.

Chiefs placed WR Kyle Williams (shoulder) on injured reserve.

Williams suffered a shoulder injury in the Chiefs' preseason finale. He was competing for one of the final receiver spots before going down. Williams could be released with a settlement when healthy.

Wes Welker (concussion) remains in the concussion protocol for now.

Welker was cleared for flying and exercise last week, but not contact. He'll increase his activity on Monday, with the hopes of participating in the non-contact part of practice. The next step would be full clearance for contact and the Week 1 game against the Colts. Welker remains on track to clear these benchmarks.

Chiefs placed QB Tyler Bray on injured reserve, ending his season.

It's a means of "stashing" Bray for all of 2014 while entering the season with Chase Daniel and rookie Aaron Murray behind Alex Smith. A big-armed but erratic prospect, 22-year-old Bray should get one more camp with Kansas City.

With an average age of 27.0, the Raiders are the oldest team in the NFL following Saturday's cuts.

With an average age of 25.09, the Rams are the youngest. Yes, the Raiders — who have averaged five wins over the past 11 seasons — are somehow older than the two teams still starting quarterbacks drafted when Bill Clinton was president. It's a testament to the desperation that's gone into constructing Oakland's 2014 roster, and frankly, ridiculous. A team that should be stockpiling upside has instead populated itself with aging veterans other teams declined to pluck off the scrap heap. It's why time is likely running out on the Reggie McKenzie era, and why the Raiders are poised to remain one of the league's worst teams. Only a Rookie of the Year-caliber season from second-rounder Derek Carr at quarterback could make this team appear on the up and up.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports new Bills QB Kyle Orton will make $5 million this season.

As ex-Rotoworlder Chris Wesseling points out, that's as much as Josh McCown is making for the Bucs. The Bills have clearly lost faith in E.J. Manuel, and appear ready to turn to Orton at a moment's notice. Manuel will keep his job to begin the season as Orton gets up to speed on the playbook, but has no room for error. With the Bills hoping to field one of the league's run-heaviest offenses, Orton will be a bottom-barrel QB2 if/when he gets the call to replace Manuel.

Vikings waived or released S Chris Crocker, S Kurt Coleman, DT Chase Baker, DT Isame Faciane, TE Chase Ford, TE Allen Reisner, RB Joe Banyard, RB Dominique Williams, WR Kain Colter, WR Donte Foster, OL Mike Remmers, OL Jeff Baca, OL Zach Kerin, DE Justin Trattou, LB Mike Zimmer, LB Justin Jackson, CB Julian Posey and CB Kendall James.

No major surprises here, except for Christian Ponder sticking as the third quarterback. UDFA OT Tiny Richardson (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve. Jerome Simpson doesn't count against the 53-man roster as he serves his three-game suspension.
