Eduardo Nunez (rib cage) took batting practice Wednesday.

It's the first time he's done so since landing on the DL, as he had been limited to hitting off a tee and taking soft-toss. When Nunez will be ready to return to game action isn't known, but it shouldn't be too far off.

Kevin Youkilis (back) took six at-bats in a simulated game Wednesday.

It was reported previously that Youkilis played in an extended spring game Tuesday, but that was actually also a simulated game. It's not clear when he'll be ready to play in a real game, but he's not far off. "I can’t tell you," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I think you have to give him a few days in a row before you evaluate to make sure that his back is healed and it doesn’t come back. The last two days have been pretty good, so he’s getting closer."

Jorge De La Rosa improved to 6-3 after limiting the Diamondbacks to one run in 5 1/3 innings Wednesday.

De La Rosa has been strong so far in his first full year back from back from Tommy John surgery. The guess here is that he will wear down this summer -- he's pitched more than 130 innings just once in his career -- but he's been quite an asset for the Rockies so far.

Andy Pettitte (trapezius) will play catch either Thursday or Friday.

It will be the first time he's thrown since landing on the DL last week with a strained trapezius muscle. "Then we’ll do some long toss, a bullpen and hopefully work it up to a simulated game," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Pettitte is expected back on June 1, the first day he's eligible, or shortly after that.

With Rafael Betancourt sidelined, Rex Brothers earned his first save of the year by pitching a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

Brothers has allowed just one run in 21 1/3 innings this season, so he was an obvious choice to close in Betancourt's place. Since it currently appears that Betancourt will avoid the DL, Brothers isn't guaranteed additional saves.

Martin Prado went 0-for-4 on Wednesday and has fallen into a 2-for-19 slump.

Prado is still hitting for a better average this month and he did in April, but that's not saying much. He's gone 12 straight games without scoring a run. He has two runs scored and four RBI in 20 games overall for the month. And not only is his season OBP a lousy .283, but he's been caught on three of his four steal attempts. Good thing the Diamondbacks gave him that four-year, $40 million deal before some team could blow them out of the water this winter.

There is no timetable for when Ivan Nova (triceps) will be activated from the disabled list.

Nova's triceps doesn't appear to be an issue anymore, but the Yankees don't seem eager to add him to the roster. The righty has already appeared in multiple extended spring games and, according to manager Joe Girardi, "felt good" during a bullpen session Wednesday. "We’ll make sure he feels OK and we’ll go from there," Girardi said. With Andy Pettitte (trapezius muscle) likely to return soon, Nova might wind up being optioned to Triple-A or being used as a long man.

Sean Marshall was not available out of the Reds' bullpen on Wednesday due to a "cranky" left shoulder.

The Reds don't seem concerned. "We’re erring on the side of caution," Marshall said. "I told them I was little sore. We have some very capable arms come out of the bullpen a time or two season so far. ... I needed this extra day of rest. I’ll be back to the way I’ve been feeling."
