Fox Sports' Jon Morosi expects the Cardinals to "find creative ways" to keep Aledmys Diaz in the lineup when Jhonny Peralta returns from his thumb injury.

Peralta should return early next month. Diaz has gotten off to an impossibly hot start, hitting .381 with a .679 slugging percentage through 26 games. Peralta was no slouch last year either, batting .275 with 17 HR and 71 RBI. Morosi said the Cardinals are open to using Peralta at both third and first base, which would allow Diaz to stay put at shortstop. Diaz is able to play any infield position, so manager Mike Matheny shouldn't have to rack his brain too hard to have both players in the lineup most days.

Pirates optioned INF Jason Rogers to Triple-A Indianapolis.

The Pirates haven't announced a corresponding roster move though it's possible the team will activate Jung Ho Kang (knee) from the disabled list. Rogers struggled mightily in his short time in the major leagues, collecting just one hit in 13 at-bats. He should get more chances later this year.

Alex Avila (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.

Avila was placed on the disabled list with a strained hamstring last week. It sounds like he's making good progress and should be available as soon as he's eligible to come off the disabled list. Dioner Navarro and Hector Sanchez have been filling in behind the plate.

Wily Peralta will start Monday against the Marlins.

Peralta was placed on paternity leave Thursday following the birth of his daughter. With Peralta unable to make his scheduled start Friday, Tyler Cravy will fill in against the Reds. Zach Davies had been scheduled to start Monday's game but he'll be pushed back a day.

Miguel Montero (back) may not require a rehab assignment.

Montero was placed on the disabled list with a back issue last week but didn't show any ill effects at batting practice on Thursday, even hitting a few home runs. There's a good chance he'll return from the disabled list as soon as his 15 days are up. David Ross and Tim Federowicz have been sharing time behind the plate in his absence.
May 5 - 6:07 PM

Chris Bassitt (elbow) will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on Friday.

We saw the writing on the wall when Bassitt was diagnosed with a torn UCL in his throwing elbow last week. Going by the usual Tommy John timeline, Bassitt won't be back until halfway through next season. Top prospect Sean Manaea has taken Bassitt's place in the starting rotation.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he wants to see Jimmy Paredes (wrist) hit more during his rehab assignment.

Paredes has hit a dismal .192 (5-for-26) with nine strikeouts since beginning his rehab assignment with Double-A Bowie on April 26. The 27-year-old clearly has some rust to shake off. The Orioles are allowed to continue his rehab assignment until May 15. After that, he'll either be recalled or optioned to the minors.
May 5 - 5:48 PM

Mariners manager Scott Servais confirmed Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session when the team returns to Seattle next week.

Benoit resumed throwing in the outfield on Sunday after being placed on the disabled list a week earlier with right shoulder inflammation. The 38-year-old produced a 3.60 ERA over five appearances before getting hurt. With Benoit sidelined, Joel Peralta has been filling the setup role ahead of closer Steve Cishek.
