Nolan Arenado is getting the day off Monday.
Daniel Descalso will start at third base and bat seventh in the afternoon game against Reds right-hander Dan Straily. Arenado went 0-for-3 on Sunday versus the Giants but still managed to collect his 39th RBI.
T.J. McFarland (knee) has been activated from the disabled list at Triple-A Norfolk.
McFarland could quickly move to the major league level now that his left knee is healed. The right-hander had a 4.73 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 13 1/3 innings of relief earlier this season for the Orioles.
Will Smith (knee) is expected to be activated Thursday.
Smith joined back up with the Brewers on Monday in Milwaukee after making three minor league rehab appearances between High-A Brevard County and Double-A Biloxi. He'll throw a simulated game Monday before taking a couple days of rest. The lefty reliever has been on the disabled list since the end of spring training with a torn LCL in his right knee.
Sergio Romo (elbow) won't be activated from the disabled list before Thursday.
Romo experienced some fatigue after making back-to-back rehab appearances last week at Triple-A Sacramento. But it doesn't sound like a major setback, and Romo is actually slated to pitch this Monday and Tuesday at High-A San Jose before possibly returning to the Giants on Thursday. The setup man has been on the disabled list since April 14 with a flexor muscle strain in his right arm.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy expects Johnny Cueto (side, back) to make his next start.
Cueto felt some discomfort in his right side and back Sunday during his six-inning start against the Rockies, but it doesn't sound like anything serious. He is lined up to take the mound Friday night in St. Louis.
Yovani Gallardo (shoulder) is expected to make at least two minor league rehab starts.
His first rehab start is scheduled for Thursday at High-A Frederick, and he'll probably go four innings in that one. Gallardo has been on the disabled list since April 23 with right shoulder and biceps tendinitis. He threw a successful simulated game Saturday and made it through another bullpen session Monday without issue. The right-hander had a 7.00 ERA through his first 18 innings (four starts) this season with the O's.
Ryan Braun (neck) remains out of the Brewers' starting lineup Monday against the Cardinals.
Braun has now missed three straight games with stiffness and soreness in his neck. He's also been battling back and wrist issues. Alex Presley is starting in left field and batting sixth on Monday afternoon with the Cardinals throwing right-hander Carlos Martinez.
Austin Jackson (turf toe) is out of the White Sox starting lineup Monday against the Mets.
J.B. Shuck will start in center field and bat fifth in the Memorial Day game versus Mets right-hander Matt Harvey. White Sox manager Robin Ventura said he's hoping A-Jax will be able to avoid the disabled list. He'll get treatment for the turf toe on Monday.
