Mets manager Terry Collins said Sunday that Jeurys Familia will continue to serve as the team's closer even after Bobby Parnell (elbow) and Vic Black (shoulder) return.

It's no surprise given how well he's pitched (2.70 ERA, 9/1 K/BB ratio over 6 2/3 innings, 5-for-5 in save chances) and the fact that Parnell's velocity has been down during his rehab assignment. Parnell could be another couple weeks away from being activated and Familia is talented enough to run away with the job.

Nationals optioned OF Michael Taylor to Triple-A Syracuse.

Taylor filled in admirably in center field while Denard Span was on the disabled list, batting .271/.314/.500 with two homers and two steals. Span is back now, though, and the Nats prefer to let Taylor to continue to play every day in the minors. He'll need another injury to occur before he gets another shot.

Nationals activated OF Denard Span from the 15-day disabled list.

He's starting in center field and batting leadoff versus the Phillies. Span made a rapid recovery from core muscle surgery, as the initial belief was that he would likely be sidelined into May. Michael Taylor has been sent down to Triple-A in a corresponding roster move.

Chris Capuano (quad) will throw a 45-pitch live batting practice session on Sunday.

It's not clear what the plan is for Capuano after that, but he might be ready to begin a rehab assignment. The left-hander could challenge Adam Warren for the fifth spot in the Yankees' rotation once he's deemed ready.

Michael Cuddyer is not in the Mets' lineup Sunday.

It's his first day of rest this season. Kirk Nieuwenhuis is in left field in Cuddyer's place. Wilmer Flores is also getting a breather, with Ruben Tejada handling shortstop.

Blue Jays purchased the contract of LHP Jeff Francis from Triple-A Buffalo.

The Vancouver, British Columbia native will give the Jays some long relief depth. Francis tossed five scoreless innings in his lone start for Buffalo.
Apr 19 - 9:49 AM

Blue Jays optioned LHP Colt Hynes to Triple-A Buffalo.

Hynes struggled in his five appearances with the big club, posting a 6.00 ERA and 3.33 WHIP. He's replaced in the bullpen by Jeff Francis.

Mariners activated SS Chris Taylor from the 15-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Tacoma.

Taylor has already played seven rehab games after successfully rehabbing from surgery to repair a fracture in his right wrist. Brad Miller is penciled in as the Mariners' starting shortstop for now, but he's off to just a .229/.282/.429 start and might have to pick it up if he wants to avoid being replaced by Taylor at some point.
