Phillies released OF Tony Gwynn Jr.

Gwynn was designated for assignment by Philly one week ago and passed through waivers unclaimed. The 31-year-old outfielder hit .163/.281/.204 in 199 plate appearances for the Phillies and will likely have to settle for a spot on a Triple-A roster on the open market.

James Paxton (lat) threw 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball Sunday in his final rehab start at Triple-A Tacoma.

Paxton gave up six hits and walked three, but the most important thing is that he was pain-free. The left-hander is expected to rejoin the Mariners' starting rotation on August 2 in Baltimore and could hold considerable fantasy value down the stretch. He had a 2.25 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, and 13/2 K/BB ratio over his first 12 innings (two starts) this season before straining his lat in early April.

Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that the Padres are working to trade Chris Denorfia "soon."

Cotillo says the Giants, Blue Jays, and Mariners are among the teams expressing interest in Denorfia, who can become a free agent after this season. The 34-year-old is batting just .244/.295/.321 so far in 2014, but his career line is much better than that and he can play all three outfield spots. The Padres have already moved closer Huston Street and third baseman Chase Headley this month.

Ian Kennedy (oblique) is expected to return to the Padres' rotation on Saturday versus the Braves.

Kennedy was scratched from his scheduled turn Monday due to soreness in his left oblique, but it's not a major concern. He is expected to throw a side session on Wednesday. Jason Lane will start in his place for the Padres on Monday afternoon at Turner Field in Atlanta.
Jul 28 - 11:08 AM

Padres recalled LHP Jason Lane from Triple-A El Paso.

Lane will make a spot start for the Padres on Monday afternoon against the Braves. The former outfielder tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for San Diego earlier this season, but he is not a good fantasy option.

Padres activated 2B Jedd Gyorko from the 15-day disabled list.

Gyorko wound up missing close to two months with plantar fasciitis in his left foot. He was batting just .162/.213/.270 in 221 plate appearances before the injury, but the 25-year-old second baseman is capable of much better down the stretch. Gyorko signed a five-year, $35 million contract extension with the Friars in early April.

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, there is a "growing expectation from rival execs" that the Red Sox will move Jon Lester before the July 31 trade deadline.

The Red Sox have failed to work out a long-term contract extension with Lester, who can become a free agent after this season, and so they might as well get something for him before he hits the open market. The Dodgers are known to have interest and many other contending teams will likely be in contact with the Boston front office over the next couple of days. Lester, 30, boasts a 2.52 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 149/32 K/BB ratio in 143 innings this year for the 48-57 Red Sox.

According to Yahoo's Jeff Passan, the Mets have reached out to the Rockies about Troy Tulowitzki.

Passan says New York is "prepared to offer top pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard in a deal for" the star shortstop, who is signed through 2021. The Cardinals have also made their interest known, but it doesn't sound like the Rockies are going to budge this summer on a trade involving the current face of their franchise. Tulo is currently on the disabled list anyway with a left hip flexor strain. He flew to Philadelphia this weekend to meet with a sports hernia surgeon and took in a game (quite controversially) on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.
