Denard Span has been scratched from the Giants' starting lineup Wednesday versus the Padres.

No word yet on the reason for the sudden absence. Gregor Blanco is now starting in center field and batting leadoff against Padres right-hander James Shields. Kelby Tomlinson will get a rate start in left field.

Cardinals RHP prospect Jake Woodford spun eight shutout frames Tuesday in a win for Low-A Peoria.

He struck out five and allowed just four hits in his longest start of the season. Woodford retired 11 hitters in a row at one point between the third and seventh innings. The 19-year-old hasn't allowed an earned run since May 3. He's won his last three starts while trimming his ERA from 3.68 to 2.22. The No. 39 pick in last year's draft has made an immediate impact in Peoria and could be headed for a promotion soon.

Wil Myers (forearm) is out again Wednesday.

Myers felt discomfort in his troublesome left forearm late Monday while picking up a baseball. It's not considered a serious setback, but the Padres will play it cautiously just in case. Brett Wallace is at first base Wednesday versus Giants righty Jake Peavy.

Asdrubal Cabrera is day-to-day with back spasms.

Cabrera left Wednesday's game against the Nationals in the bottom of the first inning, with Matt Reynolds taking over at shortstop. Asdrubal apparently felt the discomfort during pregame warmups. This doesn't sound like a serious issue, but you never know with the Mets and their recent rash of back issues.

Hunter Pence (hamstring) remains absent from the Giants' starting lineup on Wednesday afternoon.

Pence has been dealing with right hamstring discomfort since Saturday and told reporters Tuesday that he plans to take it easy and let the muscle fully heal. There's a chance he could return Friday after Thursday's scheduled off day, but it's not guaranteed. Jarrett Parker is starting in left field and Gregor Blanco is in right field Wednesday versus Padres right-hander James Shields.
May 25 - 1:25 PM

Buster Posey is not in the Giants' starting lineup on Wednesday afternoon against the Padres.

It's just a standard day of rest for Posey. Trevor Brown will get the start at catcher and bat eighth with the Padres throwing right-hander James Shields.
May 25 - 1:22 PM

Asdrubal Cabrera was removed from Wednesday's game against the Nationals with an apparent injury.

Matt Reynolds came on to play shortstop in the bottom of the first inning. Cabrera didn't bat in the top of the first, so this is an odd one. There should be an update from the Mets within the hour.

Athletics recalled RHP Zach Neal from Triple-A Nashville.

Neal will start for the A's on Wednesday afternoon against the Mariners. He has a 2.53 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 21/4 K/BB ratio in 42 2/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level, but the 27-year-old isn't the most attractive fantasy streaming option versus Seattle. This might just be a spot start.
